DURHAM, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball fought, but ultimately dropped a five-setter to Rhode Island (25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 11-15) on the first day of the Holly Young Invitational on Friday. The Big Green are now 3-4 on the season, while the Rams improved to 4-6.
Freshman transfer Tori Dozier shined, accumulating a season-high 40 assists, while also recording four digs, four blocks and six kills. Senior Sara Lindquist led the team with 16 kills, while freshman Lauren Douglas totaled 17 digs. Sophomore Carly Tower had a good match with her seven kills and .545 hitting percentage.
“That was a very hard-fought game,” head coach Gilad Doron said. “We had our chances, but just couldn't come up with enough stops tonight. I am very proud of our overall effort and that we never gave up, but we all want more, so I know our team will learn and bounce back stronger from this experience.”
Dartmouth got off to a good start in set one, winning the first three points off a trio of URI errors, but a six-point Ram run put the other team ahead (6-3). When seven of the next nine points went to the Big Green following kills by Lindquist and sophomore Abby Kott, an ace by freshman Mallen Bischoff and two errors, the match became a whole lot closer. The teams traded points until Dartmouth sat comfortably ahead (22-18), but four straight URI points tied the score (22-22). A pair of Ram errors and a kill by freshman Olympia Nagel-Caland shut the set down (25-23).
The start of the second set was just as close as the first and, thanks to a handful of errors on the other side of the net, Dartmouth had an 11-9 edge. The Big Green and the Rams tied the score a handful of times before URI started to pull away. With the other team ahead, 22-21, two kills and an ace tied things at a set apiece (25-21).
The Big Green opened the third set trailing by two, but soon had the upper hand (14-10). Four consecutive Ram points tied the score at 14-all, but Dartmouth worked hard to pull away, going on a 6-1 run thanks to kills by Lindquist, Tower and Dozier (20-15). URI got within three (23-20), but kills by Lindquist and freshman Elise Petit made it 2-1 in favor of the Green (25-20).
Dartmouth and URI were evenly matched in the fourth set until a small run put the Rams ahead, 19-14. Kills by Tower, Nagel-Caland and Petit pulled the Big Green within three points (20-17), but URI ended the set with a 5-3 run to make it a 2-2 match (25-20).
The Rams came out aggressively in the fifth set, winning nine of the first 11 points (9-2). URI got as far as nine points ahead (12-3) before Dartmouth turned things around following a pair of Kott kills, an ace by sophomore Corinne Cox and four Ram errors to make it a three-point set (13-10). Lindquist got one more kill, but URI got its 15th point before Dartmouth could get any closer.
Dartmouth will return to the court on Saturday to face Siena at 10 a.m. and host UNH at 7 p.m.
