Dartmouth Opens Play at Pair of Invitationals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Dartmouth men's tennis kicked off its busy weekend on Friday by playing in both the Connecticut State Championship at Yale and the Gopher Invitational at the University Minnesota.

At Yale, the Big Green won three of their six matches. In doubles action, sophomore Gilbert Jaeger paired up with freshman Pierce Widdecombe to take down UConn's Hank Hill and Yili Zheng in a very close match by a score of 9-8.

In singles, freshman Sid Chari rebounded from a dropped first set against St. John's player Aditya Vashistha to win the second by a score of 6-1 (10-4), while Widdecombe took down Piotr Sowinski of Marist, 6-4, 6-3.

Dartmouth was busy in Minnesota, playing 11 matches throughout the first day of action and winning six of them. The three doubles teams (made up of junior David Horneffer and sophomore Peter Conklin; sophomores Dan Martin and Casey Ross; senior Roko Glasnovic and sophomore John Speicher) went 1-1. Horneffer and Conklin took down a pair from Northwestern, 6-3, while Martin and Ross had a 6-2 win over their opponents from Denver. Speicher and Glasnovic won their match against players from Marquette, 6-3.

In singles, Horneffer downed Ben Vandixhorn of Northwestern, 6-3, 7-5, and went on to have a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ben Clark of Drake. Glasnovic won his match against DePaul's Tripp Tuff, 6-1, 6-4.

Play at both tournaments will continue on Saturday.
