BUFFALO, N.Y. — Junior
Ian Sistare came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points for Dartmouth, but 22nd-ranked Buffalo had five players score in double figures and pulled away in the second half to defeat the visiting Big Green (3-2), 110-71. Nick Perkins matched Sistare with 18 points in a reserve role while grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Bulls (4-0) in their first game at home since earning its first-ever ranking in the Associated Press poll.
Jayvon Graves (7-of-10) and Davonta Jordan (8-of-12) both posted 16 points as Buffalo shot 59.2 percent (45-of-76) from the floor. The length of the Bulls was on display as they outrebounded Dartmouth by a 45-34 margin and blocked eight shots, three by Perkins.
Sistare hit his first five shots of the game and finished 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from downtown and a perfect 3-of-3 at the foul line. Sophomore
Chris Knight was the only other Big Green player in double figures with 17 on 7-of-13 shooting.
"Buffalo has great length, great athleticism, they play hard and they simply don't stop coming at you," said Dartmouth head coach
David McLaughlin. "I thought we ran some really good sets on offense but their length allowed them to block shots that we hadn't had blocked this year. At the other end, you have to guard them for the full 30 seconds because they are good in transition, good running their stuff and good hitting the glass at the end."
Playing without star guard C.J. Massinburg did not slow the Bulls down as they ran out to a 15-0 lead as Dartmouth misfired on its first eight shots. Sistare entered the game and quickly ended the run by driving to the rim for a layup five minutes into the contest.
That bucket jump-started the Big Green offense, led by Sistare who scored 16 points in a five-minute span as he got three points the hard way before utilizing the backboard on two of a trio of 3-pointers. Knight followed with a three-point play of his own to suddenly close the gap to three at 29-26 with 9:49 still to play before the intermission.
After freshman
Taurus Samuels drove for an easy layup, Buffalo coach Nate Oats called for a timeout, and his team responded. Fueled by eight points from Jordan, the Bulls outscored the Green, 21-10, over the last eight minutes of the half to take a 55-39 lead into the locker room.
Sisatare (18) and Knight (13) accounted for 31 of Dartmouth's points in the first 20 minutes, while Jordan and Graves had 12 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the Bulls.
Buffalo started quickly after the intermission as it did to start the game, boosting its lead to 24 on an 11-3 burst that caused Big Green head coach
David McLaughlin to call a timeout. Junior
Brendan Barry and freshman
Taurus Samuels answered their coach with 3-pointers once play continued, but the Bulls scored the next nine points before extending its lead to 30 at 83-53 on a fast-break layup — two of 31 fast-break points for Buffalo. The difference peaked at 41 (99-58) before settling at 39 with the final score.
The Big Green, which entered the game sixth among Division I schools in 3-point percentage, were held to just 28 percent (7-of-25) behind the arc and 38.8 percent (26-of-67) overall.
Dartmouth continues its road swing on Saturday at 2 p.m. (PST) with a game at San Francisco (4-0), which is hosting Harvard this evening. Buffalo will welcome Marist to town on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Both the Big Green and Bulls will head to Ireland next week to play in the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic.
Notes: The 110 points are the most allowed by Dartmouth since the 1974-75 season … the Big Green dropped to 3-55 against teams ranked in the AP poll with the last victory coming in the 1956 NCAA Tournament … Sistare is now 14-of-20 (70 percent) from the perimeter this season … the 6-1 Barry matched his career high of seven rebounds while sharing the team lead on the boards with sophomore
Adrease Jackson.
