HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball played a good match, but ultimately fell to Yale, 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 24-26) at Leede Arena on Senior Day Saturday. The Big Green, playing at home for the final time in 2018, dipped to 10-13 and 5-7, while the Bulldogs improve to 17-4 and 11-1.
Sophomore Elise Petit was first with six kills and 10 points, while also adding two service aces, one dig and four block assists. Appearing in their last matches at Leede, Samantha Bozoian and Zoe Leonard played well; Bozoian had six kills and led the team with seven block assists, while Leonard had a team-leading 17 digs.
"I thought that, defensively, we did what we were supposed to do," head coach Gilad Doron said. "We could have dug and blocked more. We were able to settle down their best player, but couldn't stop No. 55. Overall, we competed hard, but we didn't get the breaks we needed to come up with at least one set. We're going back to work. We have another week to get better and hope to get a couple wins on the road."
Yale won the first three points of the first set and took that momentum into continuing to build a lead, but Dartmouth slowly worked its way back until it sat just a point behind (16-15). The Bulldogs pulled away again until there was a five-point gap, but kills by juniors Abby Kott and Carly Tower and an ace by Petit got the Big Green within two (23-21). Two Yale kills ended the set (25-21).
A four-point run at the start of the second following a pair of kills by both Petit and freshman Emma Moffett gave Dartmouth an edge (6-3). The Green remained ahead thanks to a handful of Bulldog errors until three in a row gave Yale the lead (19-18). The teams tied three more times, the last being at 22-all, before Yale got to set point. Dartmouth managed to get one point closer before the Bulldogs took set two (25-23).
There were five ties by the time the teams reached the fifth point, at which point Dartmouth pulled ahead, capitalizing on errors on the other side of the net to take an 8-5 lead. The Bulldogs threatened to steal the lead multiple times, but the Green held on until four points in a row gave Yale the advantage (20-17). Dartmouth closed the gap, getting within one any time the visitors started to pull away. Sitting at set point, two Bulldog errors tied things up (24-24), but Yale ended it with two points in a row (26-24).
Dartmouth will conclude the season on the road next weekend against Penn and Princeton.
