HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's basketball team put on an offensive display in its season opener, setting team records with 22 3-pointers and 31 assists in handing Division III Newbury College a 114-39 defeat on Tuesday night at Leede Arena. Junior
Brendan Barry led the Big Green (1-0) by recording career highs of 26 points and eight triples while dishing out five assists, while sophomore
Chris Knight quietly put together his first career double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Barry looked more like he was playing pop-a-shot as he rained down his long balls, needing just 10 attempts to record his eight 3-balls while shooting 9-of-11 overall on the night. Junior
James Foye also had a career night, doubling his previous best with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four 3-pointers to go with eight rebounds.
Three others joined Barry and Foye in double figures as
Adrease Jackson came off the bench to produce 14 points and nine boards, rookie
Wes Slajchert displayed his long-distance prowess by knocking down 4-of-6 from the perimeter for 12 points to go with five assists, and Knight with his double-double on 5-of-9 shooting. Junior forward
Will Emery led all players with 14 rebounds and six assists as the Big Green bested the undersized Nighthawks on the glass by a 64-33 margin.
After the two teams traded triples to start the night, Dartmouth scored 28 of the next 30 points in just over seven minutes to quickly take a commanding 31-5 lead. Knight started the charge by scoring four buckets down low in a 15-point spurt before the 3-pointers started to come more regularly as Foye, Slajchert and junior
Ian Sistare got into the long-ball act.
Following the next Newbury bucket, Barry heated up as he tallied 11 points in a 1:20 span with a fast-break layup among a trio of 3-pointers, boosting the Big Green lead to 33 points at 42-9 with eight minutes still to go in the half. He added two more trifectas to give him 20 points at the intermission, and Emery finished the stanza with a layup of the break just before the horn sounded for a 61-24 advantage.
The halftime stats looked more like a full game's worth as Dartmouth shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) overall and 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from downtown. The Big Green also had 35 rebounds and a 16-5 assist-to-turnover ratio while holding the Nighthawks to 27.8 percent shooting (10-of-36).
Dartmouth didn't slow down in the second half, building a 50-point lead at 79-29 with 14:28 to play when Foye stole the ball and put back his own miss on the break.
A Slajchert trey with 7:10 remaining put the difference at more than 60 points, and freshman
Garrison Wade drilled his only shot from behind the arc to balloon the bulge over 70 points at 110-39 with 2:40 to play. Wade capped the night with a fast-break dunk in the final minute, ending the offensive onslaught.
The Big Green finished the night shooting just 51.2 percent (42-of-82) and nearly as well from the perimeter at 22-of-45 (.489).
The 75-point winning margin is second only to an 88-10 victory over Rensselaer in December of 1906 in Dartmouth history.
The Big Green will be back in action when they travel to Davidson of the Atlantic-10 to play the Wildcats (1-0) — which defeated Cleveland State by 20 points tonight — on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
