HANOVER, N.H. — Junior
Brendan Barry produced a career-high 31 points on the strength of eight 3-pointers to lift Dartmouth (7-5) to a 78-68 victory over visiting Boston University (6-5) on Thursday night at Leede Arena. Barry was complemented by sophomore
Chris Knight with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Big Green, which won their third straight game for the first time in nearly two years.
Barry didn't hit his first 3-pointer until 1:14 was left in the first half, giving Dartmouth the lead for good at 29-27. He added another before the half ended, then tallied 21 points in the second half as the Big Green built up their lead to as many as 15 at 67-52 with 6:36 to play on Barry's eighth and final long ball. That triple got him to 30 points, making him the first Dartmouth player to hit that mark since
Miles Wright tied the Leede Arena record with 39 points against LIU Brooklyn three years ago on Nov. 29, 2015.
Boston University managed to whittle the lead down to seven in the final minute with some full-court pressure at 75-68. But Dartmouth beat that pressure with Knight passing ahead to sophomore
Aaryn Rai for a dunk to seal the victory with 30 seconds left.
Max Mahoney had 22 points for the Terriers on 10-of-14 shooting in the post while Javante McCoy added 13 as BU shot 53.7 percent (29-of-54) for the game.
But Dartmouth was nearly as efficient at 50.8 percent (30-of-59) while drilling 14 from the perimeter in 30 attempts (46.7 percent) as Barry was 8-of-13 from deep and 10-of-18 overall. The 6-2 guard also dished out six assists to lead all players.
The other big factor of the night aside of the 3-point shooting was the Big Green's work on the glass, hauling in 36 rebounds to just 22 for Boston University. Rai was particularly effective off the bench with seven rebounds in 19 minutes of action, three at the offensive end.
"We challenged the players before this game to really hit the boards hard, and they responded very well," said Dartmouth head coach
David McLaughlin. "Aaryn gave us some big minutes off the bench and really energized us with his work on the offensive glass, and I was really happy with how we stuck with our game when shots weren't falling early. We got a couple of stops when down five, and our rebounding really helped us get out in transition and get into our offense quickly."
Although junior
Ian Sistare, who finished the night with 10 points, drained a 3-pointer on the game's first possession, Boston University ripped off eight straight points with a pair of threes to boast an early five-point lead. Dartmouth rallied to briefly take a 14-12 lead on Barry's first points of the game, driving into the lane for a tough bucket. But the Terriers nipped right back at the Big Green with a 9-2 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer and a layup by Tyler Scanlon for another BU five-point lead at 21-16.

James Foye and Sistare each popped a trey before Knight dropped in a layup on the break to put Dartmouth back on top, 24-23. After the Terriers reclaimed the lead at 27-26, Barry began his 3-point deluge with a pair of trifectas for a 32-27 lead at the break.
The Big Green, which shot just 41.9 percent over the first 20 minutes, started to light up the nets after the intermission as Barry hit 6-of-8 from deep and Knight canned 7-of-10 from the floor, leading to a 60.7 percent shooting performance (17-of-28) in the second half.
It took just three minutes to boost the Dartmouth lead to 10. And any time Boston University started to cut into that lead, either Barry or Knight was there to maintain that double-digit lead as the duo scored 25 of the team's first 27 points of the half. But it was Rai who lofted a 3-pointer to ignite an 8-0 run, capped by Barry's last triple, to put the Green up 15, 67-52. Dartmouth held off the Terriers the rest of the way.
The Big Green have a quick turnaround with a Saturday matinee at Albany (3-7) — a team Dartmouth defeated in the Belfast Classic in Northern Ireland (91-77) — with the opening jump slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
