HANOVER, N.H. – Five runs in the third and back-to-back home runs in the fourth allowed the Dartmouth softball team to complete a series sweep of Cornell, winning on Tuesday afternoon, 10-0, in five innings at Dartmouth Softball Park.
Originally scheduled to be played on Sunday, the game was postponed due to forecasted snow, forcing Cornell to make the trek back to Hanover for the contest that took just 1:05 to finish.
The Big Green improved to 15-14 overall and 9-3 in Ivy League play to remain second in the conference, while the Big Red fell to 11-18 and 6-6.
Senior Tiffany Dyson, junior Taylor Ward and freshman Schae Nelson each scored twice, while Nelson and sophomore Calista Almer drove in three runs apiece.
Senior Breanna Ethridge (5-6) pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out five. Freshman Shelby Wilkison threw a perfect fifth inning to complete the shutout.
“I think that today was a nice performance,” head coach Shannon Doepking said. “Heading into this game, we talked about closing the door. Cornell is a good offensive team and we talked about putting at least eight runs on the board so as to not give them too much of a chance. I thought the pitchers did a nice job too. Taylor and Shae were very consistent throughout the series and they have both become comfortable at getting runs. We are taking it one game at a time and we're going to start prepping for a tough three games at Harvard.”
Ward got the first run on the board in the bottom of the second, sent home by freshman McKenna Gray's double to give Dartmouth a 1-0 edge. The Big Green took that one-run lead and added five more in the third, highlighted by Almer's bases-clearing triple.
Cornell threatened in the top of the fourth as the first two batters reached base. But Ethridge induced a grounder to third where senior Morgan Martinelli started a double play to keep Cornell scoreless for another inning.
The Big Green extended its lead in the fourth with another four runs. Sophomore Jade Bravo brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly, and back-to-back home runs by Nelson and Ward – both on the first pitch – made it a 10-0 ball game.
This weekend, Dartmouth will play its final road series, facing Harvard on Saturday and Sunday.
