HANOVER, N.H. – On a true spring afternoon, the Dartmouth softball team took away two wins against conference foe Yale in a doubleheader, winning 3-1 in game one and 5-2 in game two.
The Big Green improve to 18-16 on the season with a 12-5 Ivy League mark while the Bulldogs fall to 10-29 overall and 6-14 in conference play. Both games had a similar start with the road team taking a 1-0 lead in the first, but Dartmouth was able to hold on and defend its home field to take the win in each.
In game one Yale struck first on an RBI single from Sydney Grobman with a runner on second, but that would end up being the only run scored from the team in blue in the seven-inning frame.
Dartmouth's bats were ready to go in the first as Micah Schroder led off with a double followed by a single from Morgan Martinelli. In Taylor Ward's first at bat of the day, an impressive use of speed and aggressive base-running followed suit as a bunt hit right in front of the catcher would turn into a two RBI single for the junior. The Bulldogs' catcher, Olivia Lee, just missed the tag on Schroder as she slid in to score the first run for the home team. Ward made it to first and was running to second as Schroder scored, forcing the catcher to make a decision and she threw it to second. Martinelli used that opportune time to score the second run of the inning, before Ward was tagged out at third unassisted.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second, but the home team would tally one more run in the third on a solo homer from freshman Schae Nelson to left field, her fourth of the season.
In the final two innings, Yale showed a possibility of tying the game, after putting runners on first and second in the top of the sixth but neither would advance. The next outing for the road team proved more productive, loading the bases with the first three batters in the lineup. Freshman Heather Turner would come out for the final two outs, striking out one as the last batter grounded out to Calista Almer.
Turner was credited with the save as senior Breanna Ethridge grabbed the win in game one. Ethridge pitched six innings where she allowed five hits and one run with eight strikeouts, one error and three walks in 26 batters faced.
As game two started with a Bulldogs RBI double from Grobman, who batted in the only run for Yale in game one, the rest of the game would not follow suit to play out like game one.
Dartmouth had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the first but would not see a run scored until the bottom of the third. Tiffay Dyson led off with a single to left center field and hustled in the first run of the game for the Big Green on an RBI double from Schroder. With Schroder on second, Nelson hit a double down the left field line, batting Schroder in and taking a 2-1 lead. Ward was then walked and Gray singled to left field, loading the bases for Almer, who singled down the left line and earned two RBI as Nelson and Ward scored.
Taking a 4-1 lead into the fifth, Dartmouth's pitching and fielding would hold Yale to only two hits in the next two innings before the home team tallied an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Dyson recorded her second hit of the game with a single to the pitcher as Almer was on third, batting her in to score the fifth run for the Big Green.
The Bulldogs pushed a final effort in the last inning, scoring one run off an RBI single from Grobman once again as she batted in Annie Tarte before the final two batters struck out and lined out respectively.
Turner pitched the entire second game, earning the win and recording four strikeouts as she allowed eight hits and two runs with two errors and four walks in the seven innings.
Both teams return to the Dartmouth Softball Park for tomorrow's game slated for 12:30 p.m., which will begin at the scheduled time as of now, there is a possibility for delay due to rain in the forecast for tomorrow afternoon.
