HANOVER, N.H. – Freshman
Tracey Mills scored her first collegiate goal in the first minute of overtime to lift the Dartmouth women's soccer team past Rhode Island, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the team's first road test of 2018 at the URI Soccer Complex. The Big Green improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Rams drop their record to 0-3-0.
Â
Along with the goal by Mills, goalkeeper sophomore
Mariel Gordon strung together her second shutout in as many games, finishing the day with five saves.
Â
"We dealt with some adversity in this game going scoreless in regulation and playing a hard-working URI team," said head coach
Ron Rainey. "
Lorna MacFarlane took it upon herself to be aggressive and go at the Rhode Island players to wear them down. Overtime is cruel for one of the teams, but it was great to see Tracey (Mills) get that goal and win it for us."
Â
This is the first overtime victory for the Big Green since the 2016 season after they went 0-4 in contests that needed extra time a year ago.
Â
Much like their first game of the season, the Big Green controlled the possession from the opening whistle. Dartmouth out-shot Rhode Island, 8-3, in the first half and had three corner opportunities compared to zero for the Rams.
Â
Both sides traded shots in the second half but defense and goalkeeping were dominant in the first 90 minutes of play. Freshman
Grace Rorke had a scoring attempt that was saved in the 87th minute.
Â
Dartmouth sealed the win with just 36 seconds into the overtime period. Mills sent the ball to the back of the net off an assist from MacFarlane to give the Big Green a 2-0-0 record on the young season.
Â
Dartmouth heads west for its next two contests when they take on Pac-12 opponents Oregon on Friday in Eugene and Sunday at Oregon State.
