Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
Â
This installment features Jack McGraw of the sailing team.
Â
DartmouthSports: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Jack McGraw: I've spent most of my time fixing a moped, fishing, hanging out with friends, and thinking about what I'll be doing during my upcoming off term. Having so much free time this summer, I was able to decompress and reflect on my spring term as it was my hardest term academically as well as my busiest term of sailing to-date.
Â
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?Â
JM: ShazamÂ
Â
DS: What show do you binge watch?
JM: The Office
Â
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
JM: Although I have only done it a couple times in Hanover, I used to slackline a lot back in high school.
Â
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
JM: I am hoping to work somewhere as a software engineer; what that entails specifically, I have absolutely no idea.
Â
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
JM: My grandparents have been huge inspirations in my life. I always took it for granted how close our family could be, but now can see that these relationships don't happen overnight. Every day I feel incredibly lucky to be where I am and to have so much support from family back home.
Â
DS: What has been your best sailing memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
JM: My most memorable on-the-water experience here at Dartmouth was a practice we had last spring. The lake was still partially frozen, and we had to break through the ice to get out to open water. There was hardly any wind, and the practice felt short, but I'm not sure if I'll ever have an experience like that again sailing.
Â
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
JM: I struggle to find similarities between Hanover and San Diego. In high school, I had a rush hour commute to and from school which sometimes took 45 minutes. Here, I can roll out of bed and be anywhere on campus in a matter of minutes. I also miss being able to get in the ocean, but Lake Mascoma can sometimes fill that void. My favorite difference is having a real winter. I picked up skiing my freshman winter which has made winter one of my favorite terms at Dartmouth.
