Sailing Names Arrieta Angueira Salbidegoitia as Assistant Coach

HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth Sailing head coach Rebecca McElvain '19 has announced the hiring of Arrieta Angueira Salbidegoitia as assistant coach of the program, bringing four years of varsity skippering experience and a national championship pedigree to the Big Green.

Angueira Salbidegoitia arrives at Dartmouth after a standout collegiate career at George Washington University, where she served as a four-year varsity skipper and team captain for the Colonials from 2022 to 2026. During her time at GW, she competed in 63 collegiate regattas, including four appearances at the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship Finals, and helped guide the program to the best national finish in its history — a second-place finish in B-division at the 2025 Women's Fleet Race National Championship.

As team captain during the 2025–26 season, Angueira Salbidegoitia directed on-water strategy and mentored underclassmen skippers and crew, largely self-organizing training and race preparation for the GW program. She also served as recruitment chair from 2024 to 2025, leading outreach and evaluation of incoming student-athletes.

Her collegiate résumé includes multiple first-place regatta finishes, among them a win at the 2025 MAISA Top 9 Women's Regatta at Kings Point, a first-place finish at the 2024 Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament at St. Mary's, and a win at the 2024 Wick Trophy Women's Event at Connecticut College.

Angueira Salbidegoitia's sailing career began at age 8 in Bilbao, Spain, where she raced Optimists before advancing to C420s and J80s. Competing as tactician, she was part of the female division championship-winning team at the 2019 J80 World Championship in Bilbao, finishing 24th overall out of 80 boats, and helped capture the female division title at the 2019 Spanish National J80 Championship in Santander. She also collected multiple regional and club titles in the Optimist class between 2017 and 2019.

After relocating to the United States, Angueira Salbidegoitia sailed for New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, Ill., for one season before enrolling at George Washington, where she earned a B.S. in Biology.
