Brick & Brew Sophomore Summer: Annie Blasberg
8/3/2018 4:07:00 PM | Women's Squash, Athletics
Blasberg talks about her love for Dartmouth and working in South America.
Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
Â
This installment features Annie Blasberg of the women's squash team. A Boston native, she was in the team's No. 1 position all seasons and helped the team take wins against Middlebury and Williams in the Kurtz Cup.
Â
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Annie Blasberg: It's been so nice being on campus with the nice weather. With less of a time commitment for squash, I've been trying to maximize my time outdoors. Swimming in the river, going on hikes, and just sitting on the green with friends on Wednesdays during the weekly farmer's market have been highlights.
Â
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
AB: I visited Dartmouth my junior spring and I think that's when I knew I wanted to come here. It's hard not to fall in love with the campus and the beautiful surroundings. I also talked to some alums and hearing them rave about their experience and love for Dartmouth further convinced me that it was the right fit for me. I love going on adventures and being outdoors. I figured I could spend the rest of my adult life living in a city, so why not spend four years in 'The Woods.'
Â
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
AB: If I didn't play squash, I would definitely want to play lacrosse at Dartmouth. I played a lot growing up and in high school. I love the speed of the game and miss the rush of adrenaline that scoring a goal gives you, winning a point in a squash match isn't quite the same feeling.
Â
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
AB: My older brothers, Jack and Charlie, have always been my two biggest role models. Since I was little, I've always tried to keep up with them in whatever they were doing. They've taught me how to be tough and have motivated me to work hard in sports as well as everything I do.
Â
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
AB: Snapchat and Instagram.
Â
DS: What show do you binge watch?
AB: The Office, Gilmore Girls and Curb Your Enthusiasm are my favorite shows to binge watch.
Â
DS: What are your plans for your off-term?
AB: I took my off-term this past spring and spent 10 weeks in Cartagena, Colombia, with my teammate, Julia Herman. We volunteered at Squash Urbano, an inner city squash after-school program that also tutors them in their school subjects and teaches them English. It was an amazing experience being able to work with a great group of enthusiastic, determined and loving kids. We also spent time travelling in South America. We visited different parts of Colombia, surfed and hiked in Panama, and hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Â
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
AB: I love photography and videography. I enjoy spending time outdoors and travelling and like to capture those memories and moments through art. Â
