DartmouthSports: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Bethany Burns: I've been taking a full course load for my econ and government majors, I participated in the DRIVE student-athlete leadership program, and I've spent time out on the golf course. This summer has been a great opportunity to meet a lot of people in my class and build new friendships.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
BB: FFB (First Floor Berry) in the library is probably my favorite place on campus, especially in the summer. Even though we are at the library studying, we also find time to take study breaks and enjoy our time together. FFB to me encapsulates how strong the Dartmouth community is.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
BB: The moment I saw Main Street and drove onto campus I knew this would be the place for me. After that, meeting Coach Kirk and learning more about Dartmouth's academic opportunities affirmed my desire to come here.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
BB: I would play basketball. I played growing up, and I've gotten to know a lot of the basketball players through the DRIVE program. I have so much respect for the physicality of the sport and I admire their team atmosphere.
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
BB: I would have Reese Witherspoon play me. I've always loved her movies Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama, and she grew up in my home state of Tennessee so I think she'd be able to portray me well.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
BB: One of the things that drew me to Hanover initially was how it had the same small-town feel of my hometown (Signal Mountain). I love how in both places everyone is interested in getting to know each other, and at Dartmouth people genuinely want to continue those relationships beyond college. The scenery is breathtaking and I feel fortunate to get to play a sport where I can admire the outdoors.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
BB: I have two nicknames. My coach calls me BB, just my initials for short, and some of the players on the team call me Big B. That started with
Moon Cheong, a '21 on the team, and it grew through my love of lift and the fact that I like to give my driver a big swing.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
BB: I would tell my 15-year-old self to trust the process in every aspect of life. It's something we talk about in golf a lot, but it applies to everything. At 15, I was anxious about what my future held and I would have loved to assure myself that things would work out.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
BB: I would love to go to Augusta National, the site of the Masters tournament. I've been fortunate to have gone a few times to watch the tournament, and it's my dream to be able to play the course one day. Every hole is incredibly challenging, and thinking about all of the historic moments that have occurred there while playing would be unforgettable.
