HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office announced its first weekly award winners for the football season, and Dartmouth cornerback Isiah Swann was listed as the Defensive Player of the Week for the Ancient Eight. This is the second time Swann has earned this honor in his career.
A junior from Queen Creek, Arizona, Swann was one of many stars for the Big Green defense, which recorded its first season-opening shutout in 42 years by blanking Georgetown on Saturday at Memorial Field, 41-0. Late in the third quarter, Swann came up with a spectacular one-handed interception by tipping a pass over his shoulder into the air before hauling it in and returning it 15 yards to near midfield. He also batted down a pair of other passes in the game and had two tackles as Dartmouth limited the Hoyas to just 46 plays on offense and a mere 112 yards.
Dartmouth also had three players listed among the league's honor roll for standout performances against Georgetown: senior running back Rashaad Cooper ran 16 times for 112 yards (his first career game over the century mark) and a touchdown, senior defensive lineman Jackson Perry for blocking a 39-yard field goal attempt to preserve the shutout and freshman place kicker Connor Davis who scored 11 points in his collegiate debut with two field goals while going 5-for-5 on PATs.
Swann last won the award during his rookie season when he recorded 13 tackles, three pass breakups and an interception in his first collegiate start to help the Green defeat Towson, 20-17. Swann was also named the Ivy League and FCS National Freshman of the Week by STATS for his work in that victory.
The Big Green (1-0) have their first road test of the season this Saturday when they travel to Holy Cross (1-2), which is coming off a 31-28 overtime victory over the Ivy League's defending champion, Yale. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m., and Dartmouth fans can listen to the game locally on 94 ESPN Radio or worldwide at 945espn.com with Brett Franklin and Wayne Young '72 calling the action. Charter TV3 in Worcester, Massachusetts, is televising the contest locally as well.
Notes: Other weekly winners were Harvard running back Aaron Shampklin (offense), Penn kicker Jack Soslow (special teams) and Columbia running back Dante Miller (rookie) … Dartmouth had just one player win the defensive honor last year, that being linebacker Jack Traynor after a last-second victory over Penn … the 41-0 victory was the largest margin of victory for the Big Green in three years (49-7 over Sacred Heart) and the most lopsided shutout win since a 56-0 trouncing of Columbia five years ago.
