NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Dartmouth volleyball team got stronger as the match went on, but could not solve Columbia, falling by a score of 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 22-25) on Saturday evening.
Sophomore
Nicole Liddle and freshman
Makenzie Arent both had double-doubles; Liddle recorded 13 kills and 11 digs, while Arent had a career-high 44 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore
Francesca Meldrum had a season-high seven blocks and led the team with 18.5 points.
"I thought we fought hard and overcame slow starts in each game, which shows a lot about our team character this year and that, despite the challenges we face as a team, we never waiver and continue to fight," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "We improved from Friday to Saturday, making us realize that, as we get more options, we will continue to improve. I know our players are excited to get back in the gym this week and get ready for our first Ivy weekend against Penn and Princeton."
Columbia (10-5, 3-2) took control of the first set, but Dartmouth (5-9, 1-4) worked hard to keep up. Trailing, 15-8, a pair of kills by freshman
Grace Wiczek got the Green within five (15-10). The Lions increased their lead until they had a 21-13 advantage. Dartmouth started to chip away at that following kills by Liddle and Wiczek and some Columbia errors before the home team won (25-20).
The Lions started the second with a 3-0 edge before the Big Green capitalized on some errors on the other side of the net to tie the score. Columbia then went on an 11-4 run to put some distance between the teams (14-7). Dartmouth worked its way back and the teams traded points until Columbia had a 20-16 edge, at which point a 7-0 Dartmouth run gave the visitors their first lead of the match (23-20). The Lions came back and were only trailing by one (24-23), but another Liddle kill gave the Green the victory (25-23).
Columbia had another good start and led, 8-3, at the beginning of the third. Kills by Liddle, Arent and sophomore
Emma Moffett, and a block and two aces by Meldrum gave Dartmouth a 14-12 advantage. The Lions found some momentum, winning the next six points to move ahead (18-14). The teams went back and forth until the Big Green got within one point (22-21). Dartmouth tied the score following an error by the home team, but three straight points for Columbia ended the set (25-22).
The Big Green came out well in set four, with kills by Liddle and Wiczek giving them a 3-2 advantage. The Lions soon stole that lead, going on a 6-0 to make it an 8-3 set. With Columbia ahead, 13-7, Dartmouth got back in the game after an 8-4 run following kills by Liddle, Arent, Wiczek and Moffet (17-15). After staying close, the Lions took advantage of some Dartmouth errors to move five points ahead (22-17). The Green, once again, made their way back and, thanks to a Columbia error and a block and two kills by Meldrum, were only down by one (22-21). The Lions managed to hold on for the win (25-22).
Dartmouth will be at home for the next six matches, playing at Leede Arena until Nov. 2. First up will be Penn and Princeton next weekend.
