HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth volleyball team fought to win the third set, but ultimately fell to Penn, 3-1 (21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 21-25) at Leede Arena on Friday.
Â
Junior Elise Petit and freshman Makenzie Arent both had double-doubles; Petit recorded 13 digs and 10 kills, while Arent had 22 assists and 10 digs.
"We've got to give Penn credit," head coach Gilad Doron said. "They were more aggressive than us tonight. I felt we had moments when we played well, but we need to play more consistently for longer periods to have a better chance tomorrow against Princeton."
Â
There were three ties at the start of the first set before Penn (9-6, 2-4) got a little bit of a lead (11-8). Following kills by sophomores Francesca Meldrum and Annemarie Horn, Dartmouth (5-10, 1-5) tied it up and the teams stayed within a few points of each other until the end. With the Big Green trailing by three, Petit added one more kill before the Quakers ended it (25-21).
Â
Dartmouth enjoyed a slight advantage at the beginning of the second set until Penn worked its way back, moving ahead by six (16-10). Two straight Horn aces allowed Dartmouth to get within four (18-14) and the teams traded points until a 5-1 Dartmouth rally following kills by senior Carly Tower, sophomore Emma Moffet and an ace by sophomore Bella Hedley made it a two-point set (21-19). Penn won the next four points to make it a 2-0 match (25-19).
Â
The Green jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third thanks to after kills by Tower and Petit and a service ace by sophomore Nicole Liddle and held on to that edge until a Quaker rally put the visitors ahead (7-6). There were six ties and three lead changes before Dartmouth started to take control. Trailing, 22-19, a 6-1 run following kills by Petit, Moffet and freshman Taite Ryan, and a trio of Penn errors gave the Big Green the win (25-23).
A 6-0 Quaker run midway through the fourth put some distance between the teams (15-6). Dartmouth won all but one of the next eight points after three Penn errors and some huge blocks by Meldrum, Petit and Tower to get within three (16-13). The visitors took off after that but kills by Moffet and Petit and an ace by freshman Ali Silva got Dartmouth right back in the game (19-18). Both teams looked strong at the end, but Penn ended the match with one final kill (25-21).

The Big Green will be back on Saturday when they host the Tigers at 5 p.m.
