Eric Sachleben scored his first career goal in the 72nd minute
HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's soccer blanked Princeton, the defending Ivy League champion, 1-0 Saturday night at Burnham Field. Eric Sachleben scored his first career goal in the 72nd minute and goalkeeper Alex Budnik posted his second shutout of the season with four saves.
The Big Green (4-3-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) set the tone for the remainder of conference play with the victory, while the Tigers (5-3-0, 0-1-0 Ivy) have their four-game winning streak snapped.
Budnik was in the right position to make a stop each time for the Big Green. All of his saves came in the second half, including a couple diving stops.
Dartmouth has not lost to Princeton in its last six meetings.
The game was played in the middle of the field throughout the early going with neither team able to get much offense going. Kota Sakurai had the first shot of the match in the 21st minute, but his shot was saved by the Princeton keeper.
Dartmouth, who runs its home unbeaten streak to 23 games, entered the second half with urgency and controlled the ball in their attacking third for long stretches, putting pressure on the Princeton defense.
That paid off in the 72nd minute when the Big Green earned a throw-in from the far corner. Ahria Simons sent a long throw to the middle where Ohad Yahalom touched it off to Sachleben who fired from inside the 18 and connected for the game winner.
Budnik kept the Big Green on top with saves in the 74th, 81st and 86th minutes to secure the win.
Dartmouth will now get ready for a midweek non-conference test at Burnham Field against Vermont at 7 p.m.
