CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team began the 2019-20 season Friday, falling, 7-3, at Harvard's Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Â
The Big Green benefited from a three-goal outburst to start the second period in the opening 6:34 of the period, turning a 2-0 deficit after one frame into a one-goal lead. Senior
Daniel Warpecha got the scoring started just a minute and 36 seconds in only to have sophomore defenseman
Harrison Markell score the first of his career on a point shot 21 seconds later.
Â
Junior
Quin Foreman put the visitors on top, 3-2, four and a half minutes later, finishing off a passing play with
Brendan Demler and
Drew O'Connor.
Â
But the home team answered back with a three-goal run of their own in an even-more-impressive span of just two minutes and 37 seconds. The Crimson would cap the scoring with an empty netter and another tally in the final minutes to seal the win and pick up the two points in the ECAC Hockey and Ivy League standings.
Â
Jack Rathbone scored a pair of goals for the home team.
Â
"It was a good game and we played better than the score," Koenig Family Head Coach
Bob Gaudet '81 said. "They got up on us in the first period and we battled back. I liked how we played, but want to see us put together a full 60 minutes and tighten up a few things in our zone moving forward."
Â
The Green and White finished with 47 shots on goal in the game, firing 18 pucks on net in the first and third periods, respectively, with 11 coming in the middle frame when all three goals were scored
Â
Sophomore netminder
Justin Ferguson started between the pipes for Dartmouth, making a career-high 30 saves. Harvard's Cameron Gornet stopped 44 shots in the win at the other end of the ice.
Â
The Big Green head up to Granite State rival UNH for a Saturday night contest. Puck drop at the Whittemore Center is set for 7 p.m.
