HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball shut down Merrimack in straight sets (25-10, 25-20, 25-15) at Leede Arena on Wednesday evening.
Freshman
Jojo Brown had a season-high 10 points and nine kills, also adding two digs and a pair of block assists. Classmate
Makenzie Arent led with 19 assists, while sophomore
Bella Hedley was first with 11 digs.
"This was a good team effort today," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "We got to see a lot of different players play. Hopefully we'll be ready for senior weekend and to get a couple more wins at home. Jojo did really well. But, in general, the team was hitting well and I'm hoping that we can play even better this weekend."
Dartmouth jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set following kills by sophomores
Nicole Liddle and
Jael Campbell, freshman
Taite Ryan and senior
Carly Tower. Fast forward to the middle of the set and the Big Green were leading, 17-8. Dartmouth continued to get further and further ahead, going on a 5-0 run at the end to win (25-10).
Sophomore
Francesca Meldrum had some huge kills early in set two, helping the home team take the lead right from the beginning (5-1). The Warriors went on a 3-0 run to get within one point before kills by Brown and an ace by Hedley allowed Dartmouth to put some distance between the teams (9-4). Merrimack controlled play for a while and an 11-6 rally gave it a one-point advantage (15-14). Five straight Green points gave them some breathing room and, even while trading each point, managed to hold the Warriors off (25-20).
After Merrimack won the first two points of the third, Dartmouth worked its way back following kills by junior
Tola Akinwumi and sophomore
Emma Moffet and ace by junior
Lauren Douglas, though the set remained close (8-7). An 8-1 Big Green run gave them a comfortable lead that they never relinquished (16-8). The Warriors had a burst of energy at the end, but one final kill by Moffett ended the match (25-15).
The Big Green will close the year this weekend against Columbia and Cornell. Seniors
Maddy Schoenberger,
Abby Kott and Tower will be recognized before the match against the Big Red.
