LOWELL, Mass. — The Dartmouth men's basketball team couldn't make it four straight wins to start the 2019-20 season as Jacksonville stymied the Big Green in a 57-37 defeat on the second day of the River Hawk Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell.
Trevon Ary-Turner had 13 points with three 3-pointers for Dartmouth (3-1), but David Bell countered with 18 on a perfect 8-of-8 performance from the floor with eight rebounds to lead the Dolphins (3-2) to their second win in as many days at the event.
The Big Green were held to just 26.9 percent shooting (14-of-52) and 21.9 percent (7-32) from long range on the afternoon. Ary-Turner was the lone exception to the shooting woes, hitting 5-of-7 from the floor and 3-for-4 from downtown.
Turnovers were key factor in the game as Jacksonville forced 15 while coughing the ball up just eight times. The Dolphins held a slim 37-34 advantage on the boards and shot 44.0 percent (22-of-50) overall, overcoming a 4-of-18 (.222) performance from 3-point range.
Taurus Samuels knocked down a triple and Ary-Turner added two more in the first five minutes, giving Dartmouth an early 9-4 lead, before Jacksonville rattled off 10 straight points. The Green tied the game at 14 on a bucket by
Aaryn Rai and Ary-Turner's third long ball, only to have Aamahne Santos respond with a 3-pointer of his own and start a 14-6 end to the half as the Dolphins took a 28-20 lead into the locker room.
Ary-Turner and Samuels combined to score 18 of Dartmouth's 20 points in the opening stanza, going 6-for-10 from the floor with five treys, while the rest of the team were a collective 1-of-17 shooting the ball. But Ary-Turner also had three fouls off the bench, limiting him to 11 minutes on the court.
Bell matched Ary-Turner at the break with 11 points with Santos adding six.
The Big Green kept it close for a few minutes in the second half, but an 11-0 run — fueled by Trey Sides and Diante Wood — broke the game open at 44-24 with 12:39 to play. The difference reached as many as 26 on a Bell free throw with 7:20 on the clock, 55-29, and the only bucket in the final five minutes of the game was on a
Wes Slajchert 3-pointer for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth's leading scorers this season, Rai and
Chris Knight, were held under 10 points for the first time, though Rai led the Green with seven rebounds.
Wood chipped in 11 points off the bench for the Dolphins, while Sides dished out five assists to go with the five points he scored during the 11-0 run in the second half.
Dartmouth will look to finish up the invitational with a winning record when it takes on host UMass Lowell (2-4), which has suffered two-point losses in each of its first two games. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN3 at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Notes: This was the first meeting between the two schools on the hardwood since their only clash on December 23, 1967 when the Dolphins defeated Dartmouth down in Florida, 69-59 … the Big Green last failed to score at least 40 points in a game on Jan. 21, 2012 in a 54-38 loss against Harvard … the Dartmouth defense has held the opposition under 60 points in three straight games for the first time since January of 2015.
