Harvard scored both of its goal in the first eight minutes
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of early goals lifted Harvard to a 2-0 victory over Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field. Gabby DelPico and Angela Caloia netted the two goals.
The Big Green fall to 9-6-1 and 0-5-1 in the Ivy League, while the Crimson improve to 12-3-0 and 5-1-0 in the conference and remain in contention for the league championship.
Dartmouth led the match with 13 shots compared to nine for Harvard and the teams were even with three corner kicks.
"After the first 10 minutes I felt like we created some good scoring chances, and we were unlucky not to score the first goal and make it a game," said head coach Ron Rainey. "Give credit to Harvard, they played great, this will be a lesson learned for us as we go into Cornell. Proud of how our team fought and the effort we showed, but we have to be better for 90 minutes and we will have a better week of practice as we prepare for Cornell."
The Crimson scored on their first shot of the match in the third minute. Sophie Hirst found DelPico who weaved her way past the Dartmouth defense and fired a high looping shot to the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Moments later in the seventh minute, DelPico and Meg Tveit set up Caloia about eight yards in front of the goal and her shot went top-shelf to extend the lead to 2-0.
That was all Harvard would need as its defense stepped up for the remainder of the game. Allie Winstanley had two shots on goal, while Izzy Glennon, Mollie McGorisk, Zoe Enright and Hayley Soriano all had one.
McGorisk's shot in the 19th minute hit off the crossbar and early attempts by the Dartmouth offense in the second half were squandered by saves by the Crimson keeper.
Dartmouth plays its final match of the season at home on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Cornell. The Big Green will celebrate their seven seniors.
