HANOVER, N.H. — Sophomore
Chris Knight scored 25 points for Dartmouth, but A.J. Brodeur countered with a career-high 36 to help Penn (15-8, 3-4 Ivy) outlast the Big Green (11-12, 2-5 Ivy) in overtime at the Palestra on Friday night, 82-79. Antonio Woods hit a key 3-pointer with two minutes left, and Brodeur converted his final four free throws to keep Dartmouth at bay.
In the overtime period, Bryce Washington hit a 3-pointer on the first possession after two Penn offensive rebounds to give the Quakers a lead it would not relinquish at 73-70. The Big Green closed the gap to one point three times, the last after junior
James Foye hit three free throws with 1:05 to play to make it an 80-79 game.
After a steal by junior
Will Emery, Dartmouth had an opportunity to take the lead and appeared to do so when Foye drove to the rim for a contested layup. But he was whistled for an offensive foul while going up, negating the bucket with 37 seconds still to play.
Penn missed a pair of free throws, however, giving the Green one last chance to win the game. Knight put up a shot in traffic in the lane but could not get the roll with Brodeur grabbing the rebound before getting fouled with 0.6 seconds left. The Quaker big man made the first and purposely tried to miss the second, only to bank it in for an 82-79 lead. Dartmouth sent the inbounds pass to half court where junior
Ian Sistare, who had 16 points with four 3-pointers, heaved a desperation shot that glanced off the top of the backboard as the horn sounded.
Woods hit a 3-pointer late in the first half that gave Penn its largest lead of the night at 37-31 before freshman
Wes Slajchert began an 11-point run to end the half with a corner 3-pointer and three the hard way, tying the game at 37. Sistare added one of his long balls and Knight dropped in a layup to conclude the stanza with Dartmouth enjoying a 42-37 advantage.
Penn scored the first bucket of the second half, but the Big Green surge continued with eight more points on a Knight three-point play, a Foye layup and Sistare's last trifecta of the evening for a 50-39 lead, causing Quaker head coach Steve Donahue to call a timeout.
The strategy worked as Penn scored 16 of the next 18 points to reclaim the lead with Jake Silpe popping a trey for the go-ahead bucket. For the final 13:50 of the half, the difference on the scoreboard was three or less save a 28-second stretch when it reached four with the Quakers up, 64-60.
Dartmouth responded with a 3-pointer by freshman
Taurus Samuels, and Knight added a bucket in the paint two minutes later to give the Green a 65-64 lead with 4:26 on the clock. Back and forth it went until the six-foot Samuels hit a high-arching shot over Brodeur with a minute to play for a 70-69 Dartmouth lead.
Brodeur then hit his second of two free throws, tying the score, and the Big Green turned the ball over, one of just nine on the night for the visitors. But Penn could not take advantage as the Dartmouth defense swarmed Brodeur in the post, forcing a tough shot that only hit the side of the backboard, sending the game into overtime.
Penn shot 58.2 percent (32-of-55) from the floor with eight 3-pointers to help overcome 16 turnovers that led to 17 Big Green points. Dartmouth, meanwhile, shot 47.1 percent (32-of-68) with seven triples, but were bested on the boards, 34-27, though nine came at the offensive end that led to nine more points.
Brodeur finished the night hitting 15-of-23 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the foul line to go with 11 rebounds, while Woods also produced a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Devon Goodman added 12 points for the Quaker effort.
Knight hit a career-high 11 field goals on 21 attempts, plus all three of his free throws while leading the Big Green on the glass with five rebounds to go with three steals at the defensive end. Sistare was 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from downtown, and junior
Brendan Barry dished out seven assists and stole the ball three times, but had a rare off night shooting the ball, hitting just 1-of-8 from long range after entering the night leading Division I in 3-point percentage.
Dartmouth will attempt to salvage a split this weekend when it plays at Princeton (12-8, 4-3 Ivy) tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in a game that will be streamed live on ESPN+. The Tigers suffered a 78-69 defeat at the hands of Harvard tonight, which will play at Penn tomorrow evening.
Notes: This was Dartmouth's first overtime game in over a year and are 1-2 in overtime under head coach
David McLaughlin, now in his third year … Knight has scored 20 or more points seven times this season and was just two shy of his career high set a week ago in an 83-80 loss to Cornell … four of the Big Green's five Ivy League losses have been by five points or fewer, three by no more than three … Dartmouth is now 10-4 when leading at the half this season.
