HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Dartmouth men's golf team played almost all of its first two rounds of the spring today at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, hosted by Francis Marion University, showing a bit of rust from the winter by finishing the day 17th of the 19 teams. Senior
John Lazor will have to complete his last hole of the second round tomorrow morning before the start of the third and final round with Dartmouth at 59-over par.
Temple will enter the third round at the top of the leaderboard, one stroke ahead of Furman with an 11-over 587, while Davidson is well within striking distance with a 591 (+15), four strokes off the pace.
Sophomore
Jason Liu had the best day for the Big Green, carding a 79-76—155 (+11) to sit in a tie for 52nd in the 95-player field at the par-72, 6,913-yard course. His day began inauspiciously on the 543-yard, par-5 fifth hole with a double bogey, but he righted his ship with pars on the next four holes and added a pair of birdies to his round before settling for a 7-over 79. Liu's second round began with back-to-back birdies, added two more and was 1-under through 14 holes before stumbling a bit at the finish to card a 76 (+4).
Lazor shook off a rough opening 18 to play the first 17 of his next tour at 2-over par. Like Liu, he started on the fifth hole and sank seven straight pars before hiccups on 12 and 16 with double bogeys. But he promptly birdied the next hole and two others to end the day on a high note. His two-round total of 13-over par) put him in a tie for 62nd place.
The Big Green's best score of the first round belonged to senior
Reed Russ with a 6-over 78, featuring a birdie on the par-5 11th hole and 10 pars. He split his second round evenly between pars and bogeys to conclude the 36 holes with a 159 (+15), tied for 72nd.
Both sophomore
Sam Ohno and freshman
Charles Petrie collected three birdies over their two rounds, but found themselves in ties for 85th and 92nd place, respectively.
Temple's Trey Wren has a two-stroke lead over Brad Bawden of Memphis thanks to nine birdies and an eagle over the two rounds to card a 71-69—140 (-4). His second 18 produced one of just three rounds under 70 on the day, with the others coming from High Point's Brendan McDougall (first-round 69) and Furman's Raj Ghosh (first-round 68).
After four golfers complete their final hole of the second round, the field will begin the third round with a shotgun start in the morning.
