PRINCETON, N.J. – Dartmouth led at the half, but a slow third quarter where it was outscored 27-8 put the Big Green in a hole and they could not recover for the rest of the game.
On the bright side, the Big Green (12-12, 5-6 Ivy) remain tied for fourth place in the standings due to a Yale loss at Cornell. The Tigers (17-9, 9-2 Ivy) have officially qualified for the Ivy league tournament.
Elle Louie was the only member of the Big Green in double figures with 12 points.
Kealy Brown had nine, while
Isalys Quinones finished with eight points and nine rebounds and
Katie Douglas had eight and five boards.
Annie McKenna put together seven points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
"We showed great effort in the first half and had a better second quarter," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "We talked about how important protecting the paint and transition defense would be. Princeton plays with a lot of pace and both teams were trying to find a rhythm. Princeton found there's in the third quarter so credit to them. We have to hold our heads up as we are still battling for contention."
Princeton jumped out to a fast 7-2 start over the first four minutes of the game. Douglas came off the bench to give the Big Green the spark they needed and scored two straight baskets to make it a three-point game. The Tigers then scored the next four, but a 3-pointer by Brown brought the Dartmouth deficit to 19-13 with 3:04 to go in the first. With Dartmouth down by four, the Tigers converted a layup at the buzzer to take a 19-13 lead after one.
McKenna took it upon herself to get things going in the second, scoring the first five Dartmouth points, cutting the Princeton lead to 19-18 with 6:54 in the quarter. The Big Green defense stepped up, not allowing a Tiger basket until over three minutes into the second. The teams traded baskets until Quinones and Louie scored four straight, giving the Big Green a 28-25 advantage with 2:28 until the half. Princeton made one more basket with a minute left to make it a one-point game at the half.
Louie started the third with a layup to bring the Dartmouth lead to 30-27. Princeton then got it going from all areas, going on an 11-2 run with a 3-pointer and four layups to take the lead and build it to 38-32 with 4:31 to go in the quarter. After a Dartmouth timeout, Princeton kept its foot on the pedal, outscoring the Big Green, 16-4, in the final four minutes. All-together, it was a 27-8 quarter for Princeton, giving them a 54-36 lead.
It was a low scoring fourth quarter with Dartmouth outscoring Princeton 11-10. Brown and Douglas each scored four in the quarter, but it would not be enough for the Big Green to get back into the game.
The Big Green are back in action at The Palestra on Saturday at 6 p.m. when they battle Penn.
