HANOVER, N.H. — After senior
Guilien Smith tied the game with a 3-pointer to start the second half, Penn responded with a 14-point run and never looked back in spoiling Senior Night for Smith at Dartmouth with a 65-51 victory over the host Big Green (11-17, 2-10 Ivy). A.J. Brodeur had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Quakers (17-11, 5-7 Ivy) to the 14-point victory while three of his teammates joined him in double figures.
Those 14 consecutive points were not the end of Penn's run, however, as the Quakers rattled off 15 more while holding Dartmouth to just five over a 13-minute span. When junior
James Foye, who led the Big Green with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting, drove for a layup with 5:52 remaining, it was the first two Dartmouth points in almost five minutes.
After being held to 36.7 percent shooting (11-of-30) in the first half, Penn hit more than half (16-of-31, .516) in the second stanza to finish at 44.3 percent for the game. And while the Big Green finished the second half a respectable 11-of-24 (.458) from the floor, they started the period just 3-of-15 before knocking down eight of the last nine shots.
The Quakers attempted 12 more field goals thanks to nine offensive rebounds and forcing 17 turnovers from the Ivy League leader in fewest miscues this season.
Joining Brodeur (9-of-16) in double figures were Antonio Woods (14), Devon Goodman (13) and Jackson Donahue (10). Donahue became the 11th Penn player this season to score at least 10 points in a game.
The only Dartmouth player to hit double digits outside of Foye was sophomore
Aaryn Rai with a dozen on 5-of-10 from the floor.
Smith, who lost a season and a half to injuries the last two years, wrapped up his home career with six points on a pair of 3-pointers and a season-high five rebounds.
"I know it was frustrating for Guilien to not be able to do the things he was capable of with the injuries, but he always handled himself like a pro and never let it show on the court," head coach
David McLaughlin said. "He showed up every day for practice — whether he was playing, recovering rehabbing, whatever — and gave everything he had to this program without fail. That is the sign of a true leader and that is the legacy he leaves with his teammates."
Dartmouth will wrap up the 2018-19 season on the road at Columbia (9-17, 4-8 Ivy) — coming off a road sweep at Brown and league-leading Yale — and Cornell (13-15, 5-7 Ivy) on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at 7 p.m. each night.
Notes: The 51 points are a season low for the Big Green … the seven 3-pointers give Dartmouth 260 for the season, three shy of the program record set in 2001-02 … the Big Green had not trailed any other Ivy League team outside of Yale by double digits at any point this season until tonight … Dartmouth's top two scorers this season, sophomore
Chris Knight and junior
Brendan Barry, were held to a combined nine points, though they each grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
