RINGOES, N.J. — The Dartmouth women's golf team tied for the low round on the second day of the Ivy League Championship with a 14-over 302 to move into second place, just two strokes behind Columbia's 607 (+31) with 18 holes remaining at The Ridge at Back Brook. Senior
Catharine Roddy rebounded from a rough opening day to be one of three players in the field to card a 1-over 73 and lead the Big Green on Saturday, while freshman
Kaitlyn Lees sits in second place overall, just one stroke back.
The top four teams in the standings are separated by a mere four strokes with Penn — the leader after the first round — a stroke behind Dartmouth and Harvard one behind the Quakers. Princeton is also still in the running for the title, just eight strokes off the pace, while Yale (+57) and Brown (+62) are sixth and seventh, respectively.
Roddy's day didn't start terribly well on the 6,042-yard, par-72 course as she bogeyed each of the first three holes. But her fortune changed on the 382-yard, par-4 fourth with a birdie, one of three for her in a span of four holes. A bogey on nine took her to the turn at 1-over par, but a birdie on the 10th followed by seven straight pars had her even entering the final hole. But even with a bogey on 18, her 73 tied for the best score of the day and lifted her nine places into a tie for 20th for the tournament.
While Roddy was posting Dartmouth's best score, Lees was putting together about as consistent a round as one could post. The rookie made par on each of the first 16 holes before bogeys on 17 and 18 left her with a 2-over 74, matching her first-round total to give her a 148. She will enter the final round on Sunday one stroke behind Columbia's Jennifer Wang, who followed up her 2-under 70 on Friday with a 5-over 77, losing two strokes on the field.
Two other Big Green golfers sit just outside the top 10 in sophomore
Moon Cheong and junior
Maddie Nelson. Cheong began the day with a birdie and two pars on the first three holes, but closed the round with a 6-over 78. Nelson was 4-over at the turn, then had a roller-coaster ride on the back with three birdies and four bogeys to finish up with a 5-over 77. The pair are tied for 11th at 10-over (154) for the two rounds.
Freshman
Kristen Chen dropped a birdie on the opening hole, but settled for an 81 (+9) by the end of the round, leaving her tied for 28th at 17-over.
The final round will tee off on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
Notes: Dartmouth is looking to win its first Ivy League title and has never finished higher than third, last doing so in 2004 … the Big Green have never had an individual finish higher than third (Roddy in 2017) … Lees has made par on 28 of the 36 holes, two more than any other player in the field … only two golfers have had more than Nelson's five birdies in the first two rounds.
