HANOVER, N.H. — A total of 1,328 teams from 312 NCAA Division I school were honored with Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR).
Dartmouth had 18 teams that earned Public Recognition Awards, tying for the most at any school with fellow Ivy League schools Brown and Columbia, along with Holy Cross of the Patriot League. The NCAA's Public Recognition Awards have now been in existence since 2006 with the Big Green finishing in the top three each of the 14 years the honors have been bestowed. In that time, Dartmouth has a total of 308 awards, more than any other institution with Brown running second with 290.
The 1,328 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 857 women's teams and 471 men's or coed squads. The award is given to teams that have an APR among the top 10 percent in their respective sport. APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport.
The total number of teams being recognized increased by 44 from a year ago, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Scores for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, with 1,214 teams earning a perfect score, an increase of 26 teams.
Each NCAA varsity team is given a score on a scale from 1-1,000 (1,000 meaning that every individual on that team was academically eligible for the following term and either returned to school or graduated). All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 over a multi-year period to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. All of the 26 Dartmouth teams measured were well above the penalty line. The current report measures enrollment from the academic years 2014-15 through 2017-18.
In all, 105 Ivy League programs were honored, more than any other conference. The Atlantic Coast Conference was second with 95 qualifying and the Patriot League third with 94. The 105 teams comprised 47.3 percent of the teams in the Ancient Eight, the highest percentage of the Division I conferences with the Patriot League second (44.3 percent) and the Big East third (42.2 percent).
The Big Green is also first in the nation with seven teams who have appeared on this list each year since it first began 14 years ago. Those seven Dartmouth teams are: women's basketball, football, men's golf, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's swimming and diving, and women's tennis. No other school has more than five.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released on May 8.
Men's lightweight and heavyweight rowing, women's rugby, men's and women's squash, coed equestrian and coed sailing do not contest NCAA Championships and therefore were not measured.
