HANOVER, N.H. – Senior
Zoe Leonard of the volleyball team was one of 14 graduating seniors to receive the Dartmouth 2019 Legacy Award.
Â
Since at least 1984, Dartmouth has recognized deserving seniors or other graduating students at the end of their final year who, over the course of their time at Dartmouth, have contributed substantially to the quality of life on campus.
Â
"Zoe has displayed the highest integrity as a student, athlete, and member of the Dartmouth Community," said Dartmouth head volleyball coachÂ
Gilad Doron. "She is a team player in every sense of the word. Zoe brought her Hawaii roots to action by taking care of her teammates with respect, integrity and self-sacrifice. Zoe is a true example how a Dartmouth student can be part of an NCAA D-1 team while taking part in so many other organizations on campus and impact our community."
Â
From Hilo, Hawaii, Leonard has consistently given back to the Upper Valley community throughout her four years at Dartmouth. She has helped coordinate community service opportunities for CHaD Hero, "Dancing Through the Decades" at the Kendal Retirement Home, the Special Olympics and the Thetford Elementary mentorship program. Leonard also helped raise money towards the "Snowpile" toy room at DHMC.
Â
Many of Leonard's community service projects outside of Dartmouth have involved Native Hawaiian and Native American youth. She has twice participated in the Native Vision program on the Okmulgee and Shiprock reservations. She also volunteered for the Dartmouth Horizons program, working with Executive Director Carmen Lopez '97 to help Native Hawaiian students explore college opportunities and college preparation embedded in native identity.
Â
A two-year captain of the volleyball team, Leonard earned Second-Team All-Ivy as a senior and was named to the Academic All-Ivy Fall Team while breaking into the top 10 in all-time digs at Dartmouth.
