HANOVER, N.H. — Junior
Julianne Strauch and sophomore
Kaitlyn Lees each carded a 4-over 76 in the first round of the Dartmouth Invitational at the Hanover Country Club, helping the Big Green finish the day tied for seventh in the 13-team field at 20-over par. Harvard sits atop the leaderboard with an 8-over 296 with Stetson on the Crimson's heels, just two strokes back.
While both Strauch and Lees finished the day tied for 16th, freshman
Angela Zhang had a solid collegiate debut with a 5-over 77 on the 5,872-yard, par-72 course to put her in a tie for 23rd. Senior
Maddie Nelson was two strokes behind her rookie teammate with a 79 (+7) in a tie for 42nd, and freshman
Samantha Yao rounded out the Dartmouth fivesome with an 80 (+8).
But it was senior
Kristen Soh who provided the lowest score by a Big Green golfer on the day with a 2-over 74 to end up in a tie for 11th, though she played as an individual. Sophomore
Kristen Chen matched Zhang's score while also playing as an individual, and senior captain
Bethany Burns carded an 86 (+14).
The defending medalist, Yale sophomore Ami Gianchandani, took control of the round after posting a 5-under 67. She will enter the second and final round tomorrow with a three-stroke lead on Harvard's Chloe Royston, while Albany's Helga Einarsdottir was the only other golfer to finish the day under par with a 1-under 71.
Sunday's round will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
