WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior captain
Katie Spanos scored the overtime winner Sunday afternoon to lift the Dartmouth field hockey team to its first victory of the season, taking down Holy Cross, 2-1, at Hart Field.
For Spanos, it was her second goal of the weekend and second in as many games as the Big Green (1-3) picked up their fourth straight win and 10th in the last 11 meetings against the Crusaders (2-3).
The goal was also Spanos' seventh game winner of her career, the most of any Dartmouth player since the start of the 2015 season. It was, though, the first of those seven winners to come in overtime.
Dartmouth had not won a game in OT since Oct. 21, 2017 (vs. Columbia), snapping a stretch of four extra-session contests without a victory.
But that all ended off the stick of the Big Green's team leader, finishing a play from freshman Amélie Perrier just over six minutes into the extra session. For Perrier, the assist was the first point of her collegiate career, while the goal was the 60th point for Spanos, moving her into the program's top-10 all-time (tied for 8th).
"The kids deserved that 'W,' they played with a lot of heart and grit," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "Bella had another solid game, and across each line we did some very positive things. Offensively, we were able to generate many more chances. We know we need to finish on these, so that's what we'll prioritize this week!"
Sophomore
Gracyn Campbell notched her first goal of the season just before halftime, deflecting in a rebound shot on a corner play.
Sara Falkson's shot that Campbell redirected proved to be Falkson's first career point, joining Perrier in the accomplishment.
The 1-0 lead lasted just 27 seconds as the home team pulled even with Minke Koomen scoring in the final minute of the second quarter. It would be the only time all afternoon that Holy Cross could solve Dartmouth goalkeeper
Isabella Santucci, as the sophomore posted seven saves in the game, bringing her weekend total to 27.
The Big Green pushed the ball and played a better transitional game than they had in their first three games of the season, posting 24 shot attempts Sunday, more than double its entire output (11) coming into the contest.
Dartmouth begins a four-game homestand next weekend with a Friday contest against New Hampshire (4 p.m.) and then the first-ever meeting with Merrimack on Sunday (2 p.m.).
