HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped a double-overtime heartbreaker Friday afternoon at Chase Field to cross-state rival New Hampshire, 4-3.
Â
The Wildcats mounted a late comeback bid and eventually won two minutes into the second overtime period. It's the third OT game of the season and second straight contest that needed at least one extra period for the Big Green (1-4) in just five games this fall.
Â
Kayla Sliz scored the game winner for the Wildcats (4-3), pushing their win streak to four games. Sliz was the hero of the game as she sent it to overtime thanks to the tying goal with two minutes and 36 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, setting herself up to once again find the back of the cage in the 73rd minute.
Â
For Dartmouth,
Katie Persin and
Carmen Braceras each scored in the game with the latter notching two in the contest.
"We definitely battled in that game, but it's always disappointing to give up a lead, and we did that a couple times," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "We need to build from this game, as we head into Sunday's match. We need to find ways to be smarter and more efficient with our opportunities.
"We gave UNH too many chances to get back in the game, and they are a team who will take advantage of those; and did," Fowler added. "We know we can bounce back to compete Sunday, and will need to do that against Merrimack."
Â
Persin got the scoring started early, notching her first of the season in just the second minute of play. The first of Braceras' two tallies came in the 14th minute and stretched the home team's lead to two. Braceras finished off a nice passing play with
Taylor Hantman for her third of the season.
Â
UNH pulled even with goals in the 18th and 34th minutes.
Â
However, with under 10 minutes to play, Dartmouth was denied a scoring opportunity in circle by the physical play of a UNH defender and was awarded a penalty stroke. Braceras stepped up and delivered the go-ahead goal with a high shot that hit the top of the back of the net for her fourth of the young season.
Â
Sliz answered back nearly five minutes later with the equalizer for the first of her two late-game markers.
Â
Once again, goalkeeper
Isabella Santucci was strong, finishing with 11 saves, including seven in either the fourth quarter or the first overtime period. She also had help from her defense as Cecilia Monnin and
Maddie Donahue had key defensive saves in those late stages that kept the game going.
Â
The Big Green remain at home for their second contest of a four-game homestand Sunday against Merrimack. The first-ever meeting between the two programs is set for a 2 p.m. start.
