HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team picked up its first home win of the season Sunday, defeating Merrimack, 4-1, in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Big Green (2-4) sophomore
Sara Falkson scored the first two goals of her career, with
Lia Constantine and
Katie Spanos picking up the others in the three-goal triumph at Chase Field.
The Warriors' (0-6) Jane Bonazzoli ruined the shutout bid with 3:26 remaining. Despite that, goalkeeper
Isabella Santucci picked up the second win of her career, needing to make just one save.
Constantine opened the scoring in the ninth minute, finishing off a nice passing play from
Meg Barnes for the only goal of the opening half. The assist was the first collegiate point for Barnes.
Falkson scored the first of her two goals just 28 seconds into the fourth quarter, finding the back of the cage with
Katie Spanos picking up the helper. The second of the day and of her career came just under 10 minutes later on another corner play with
Katie Persin and
Cecelia Monnin getting the assists.
After the Warriors cut the home team's lead to just two, Spanos — a captain and senior — knocked in a loose ball for the fourth Dartmouth goal to cap the scoring that included three fourth-quarter tallies for the Green and White.
The home squad controlled play all day, outshooting the visitors, 24-5, including 14-2 on target. The Big Green also posted three times as many corner plays, 9 to 3, as their counterparts from Merrimack.
Dartmouth begins Ivy League play Saturday afternoon against Princeton. A noon start time is schedule from Chase Field.
