STORRS, Conn. – The Dartmouth volleyball team concluded the Dog Pound Challenge on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross (25-21, 25-22, 25-10). The Big Green are now 4-5 overall in 2019.
Â
Freshman
Makenzie Arent had her second straight double-double with 20 assists and 12 digs and also had a team-leading four aces. Junior
Elise Petit was first with nine kills and second with 14 digs, while sophomore
Nicole Liddle had seven kills and led with her 15 digs.
Â
At the conclusion of the tournament, Arent and classmate
Grace Wiczek were named all-tournament.
Â
"I thought that, once we settled after the first game, we were able to play a smart and efficient game against a very tough and scrappy Holy Cross team," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "Elise and Grace played smart and Fran was able to get going after the first game, which was big for us. Playing in Gampel Pavilion is not easy, as the size can be challenging, but we passed very well today and this weekend as a whole. We have a week to get better before we head to Harvard to open Ivy play and I know our team will be ready to battle next week."
Â
After an Arent Ace started the first set, Holy Cross took control and left Dartmouth trailing a few points behind. With the Crusaders leading (12-8), a 9-2 Big Green run thanks to two Holy Cross errors and kills by sophomore
Francesca Meldrum, Wiczek and four by Petit put Dartmouth up, 17-14. The Green stayed a few points ahead until a five-point Crusader run switched the lead (21-19). That turned out to be the last point the Big Green allowed, as a 6-0 run following three errors, two kills by Liddle and an ace by sophomore
Bella Hedley ended the set in Dartmouth's favor (25-21).
Â
The Big Green took their momentum from the first set into the second and started off with a 5-0 advantage. Four straight points on the other side of the net got Holy Cross back in the game. Two ties and a 6-1 Crusader run gave them the edge (15-10). Dartmouth capitalized on some errors by the opponent to move ahead (19-18), but that lead did not last long. Four ties later and with the score at 22-22, three Holy Cross errors made it a 2-0 match (25-22).
Â
There were six ties by the sixth point of the third set and, from there, Dartmouth ran away with the lead following a 14-3 rally thanks, in part, to kills by Wiczek, Meldrum, Liddle and Arent (20-9). The Crusaders, who had gone scoreless for 10 straight points, broke up the Big Green's run to get to double digits, but a 5-0 Dartmouth rally ended the match (25-10).
The Green will begin a five-game Ivy road trip, starting with Harvard on Saturday.
