Dartmouth was tied with the top team in the nation at halftime

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Dartmouth men's soccer kept things tight in the first half against the number one team in the nation, but came up short to Wake Forest, 3-1, Friday night in the season opener.

Freshman David Alino scored the lone goal for the Big Green (0-1-0) in the 29th minute with Tiger Graham and Matthew Ranieri getting credit for a double assist. The Demon Deacons (3-0-0) scored in the 5th, 62nd and 83rd minutes.

Sophomore Alex Budnik earned the starting nod in goal and finished the contest with six impressive saves against tough shots from the Wake Forest offense.

Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the game. In the 5th minute, Eddie Folds and Isaiah Parente found Justin McMaster who headed a close one-timer past the diving Budnik.

Dartmouth's defense tightened up and was able to block a number of Demon Deacon shots before the Big Green had their first oppurtunity on the offensive side. In the 29th minute, Ranieri sent a long throw in to Graham who touched it off to Alino who knocked it off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for his first career goal, tying the game at one.

The Big Green rode that momentum with three more shots in the half and withstood six shots by Wake Forest to keep the score tied at the break.

The Demon Deacons took control in the second half and outshot the Big Green, 8-1, in the final 45 minutes. McMaster picked up his second goal in the 62nd minute to give the home team the lead for good and Alistair Johnston scored to put the game away in the 83rd minute.

Henry Baldwin got a shot off in the 85th minute, but the ball sailed wide and time expired as the Demon Deacons held on.

Dartmouth will now get ready to play on Burnham Field for the first time in 2019. The home opener is against UMass at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
