Dawson McCartney scored on a header off an assist from Zach Kalk
HANOVER, N.H. – Dawson McCartney scored in the 21st minute and Alex Budnik finished with four saves for his first shutout of the season to propel Dartmouth men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over UMass Tuesday night at Burnham Field.
The Big Green (1-1-0) notch their first victory of the season, while the Minutemen (3-1-0) suffer their first defeat of the year. UMass came into the game having not allowed a goal all season and Dartmouth put an end to that streak.
Playing in Hanover for the first time in 2019, the Big Green started the game in attack mode and fired away five shots in the first 18 minutes, including one on goal. The sixth shot was the difference in the contest. In the 21st minute, Zach Kalk sent a perfect cross from the right side to McCartney, who charged and headed home his first goal of the season.
UMass quickly turned it around, challenging Budnik for the first time in the 22nd minute. The Big Green back line locked the Minutemen attack down and Budnik come away with saves in the 33rd and 36th minutes to maintain the lead at halftime.
Much of the second half was played in the middle of the field. McCartney and Alex Van Schalkwyk each got shots off in the 52nd minute, but both were off the mark.
Budnik's fourth save came in the 61st minute and the Big Green withstood a late barrage from the Minutemen with Mothibi Penn-Kekana coming away with a key tackle to secure the win.
Dartmouth has a tough test next. Michigan State heads to Hanover for a meeting on Saturday at 7 p.m.
