HANOVER, N.H. — Freshman
Tyler Campbell scored his third goal of the season with just 2:42 left in regulation to break the deadlock and give the Dartmouth men's hockey team a 3-2 win against No. 7 Clarkson Friday night at Thompson Arena.
Â
The Big Green (9-5-3, 6-3-1 ECAC Hockey) defeated its first second top-10 team of the season (No. 2 Cornell) on home ice with the result, while the seventh-ranked Golden Knights (15-4-2, 9-3-0 ECAC) dropped just its third league game of the season.
Â
"That's a really good Clarkson team," Koenig Family Head Coach
Bob Gaudet '81 said. "What a good game. It felt like a chess match at points where both teams were making moves and gaining an edge and the other would counter.
Â
"I was really pleased with the puck movement on the game winner," Gaudet said. "I was really happy for those three guys with how hard they work and what they were able to do out there."
Â
Gaudet is referring to not only to Campbell on the score, but fellow forwards
Sam Hesler and
Erik Urbank who moved the puck around the zone that led to the winner. Campbell intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and brought it in over the blue line before dropping back to Hesler. The sophomore then dished it over to his classmate Urbank for the one-timer bid from the top of the far circle.
Â
The initial shot was stopped, but trickled between the arm of Golden Knights goalie Frank Marotte and into the crease behind him. Campbell, going hard to the net, reached over the pad and knocked it into the net for the eventual winner.
Â
"It was a nice play by the line," Campbell said. "I thought Urbank was going to get it, but it was just sitting there and I hoped I would be able to get my stick on it as I was going by the post. Happy I did."
Â
It was the second big score of the year of the season for the rookie winger who also had the late-game tying goal against Quinnipiac in November. With an assist on an earlier goal, Campbell also had himself a two-point night, the first multi-point game of his career.
Â
Junior
Collin Rutherford got the scoring started with an unassisted marker at 2:48 of the middle frame, only to see Clarkson's Josh Dunne answer back a minute and a half later. Senior
Will Graber put the home team back up a goal with his fifth of the season at 11:32 of the second, taking a pass high in the offensive zone, showing great patience with the puck before his cutback move to the slot opened a shooting lane for the high wrister into the back of the twine.
Â
The visitors answered back once again to tie the score just over midway through the final period as Connor McCarthy scored his seventh of the season.
Â
The final goal will get the headlines, but the strong play of senior
Adrian Clark in net cannot be understated. He finished with 28 saves, including a remarkable sprawling pad stop in the third period. Team captain
Brendan Demler bailed his team and netminder out early on, too, pulling a would-be score off the goal line to keep the game scoreless early on.
Â
The Big Green remain at home Saturday night, playing host to St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. The game marks a celebration of the pro careers of the recently retired Lee Stempniak '05, Ben Lovejoy '06 and Tanner Glass '07. The first 500 fans through the door will receive a commemorative t-shirt, while posters will also be handed out to be used in a post-game autograph session.
