HANOVER, N.H. —
Aaryn Rai scored 18 points while
Chris Knight and
Trevon Ary-Turner each produced 16 as the Dartmouth Big Green won their third straight game with a 66-59 victory over visiting Penn on Friday night at Leede Arena. Dartmouth (10-14, 3-6 Ivy) converted 6-of-8 at the line down the stretch to hold off the Quakers (13-9, 5-4 Ivy), who hit three 3-pointers in the final 1:35.
The Big Green led for essentially the entire game, save for falling behind by a point once in each half. While the Dartmouth trio of Knight, Rai and Ary-Turner combined for 50 points, it was the defense that shone brightest, holding Penn to 36.7 percent shooting, outrebounding the Quakers, 40-31, and swiping the ball eight times to match a season high.
And for the second straight time, the Big Green kept Penn star A.J. Brodeur in check as the senior forward was just 4-of-16 for eight points. Brodeur has scored in double figures against every Division I opponent in his last 46 contests, except against the Big Green in both encounters this season.
"Generally speaking, teams want to play inside out," Dartmouth head coach
David McLaughlin said after the game, "and Penn does a very good job of running its offense that way. But I thought
Chris Knight did a terrific job in the post, allowing our perimeter defenders to stay closer to their man and not allow those inside-out passes, make Penn a little uncomfortable in unfamiliar shooting positions. While they hit some of those shots to their credit, overall the guys executed the game plan very well."
Dartmouth was enjoying a 52-42 lead with 9:50 to play after
Taurus Samuels drilled a 3-pointer, but Penn came back with an 8-1 run — capped by a Jordan Dingle triple — to close the gap to three, 53-50, with six minutes still to play.
The Big Green responded with seven straight points on a reverse layup by
James Foye, two free throws by Rai and an Ary-Turner trifecta with 1:45 reamining, boosting their lead back to 10 at 60-50. Devon Goodman had an immediate response with his third long ball of the night, and Penn called a timeout with 1:33 still to play.
The two teams traded turnovers and both sides missed a shot before Ary-Turner calmly converted two foul shots with 43 seconds left. Not even 10 seconds later, Mike Martz ripped off a 3-pointer for the Quakers, closing the gap to six, 62-56, with 32 ticks showing.
After Rai hit 1-of-2 at the line, Eddie Scott got into the perimeter game, popping another Penn trey with 16 seconds to play, bringing the Quakers within four, 63-59. But
Ian Sistare canned two more free throws, and Penn could not get another long ball to go down, allowing Dartmouth to finish off the win and end a personal five-game skid against the Quakers.
Scoring came slowly early in the game with the Big Green holding a 10-6 lead after eight minutes of play. Penn managed to take a 17-16 lead on a Goodman fastbreak dunk, but Dartmouth rattled off 10 straight points with five different players contributing to the run. By halftime, however, the Quakers were back within one, 28-27.
While Penn got the first basket of the second half, Rai took over the scoring duties with the first 11 points of the stanza for the Green. A Luke Monroe three-point play tied the game at 37 with 15 minutes remaining, but five minutes later, Dartmouth owned its 52-42 lead then closed out the win.
Rai was 5-of-12 from the floor with a 3-pointer, plus 7-of-8 at the charity stripe for his 18 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. Knight was 7-of-14 overall and 2-of-2 at the line with seven boards, and Ary-Turner posted his season-high output with an efficient shooting night of 5-of-7 field goals, 2-of-4 from distance and 4-of-4 at the foul line.
As a team, Dartmouth shot only 39.3 percent (22-of-56) overall and 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from downtown, but it converted 81.0 percent (17-of-21) free throws.
Goodman led the Quakers with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting and 3-of-9 from the perimeter, while Monroe (12 points) and Dingle (11) joined him in double figures.
Dartmouth will look to make it four straight with Princeton (11-11, 6-3 Ivy) in town tomorrow night. The game tips at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+ featuring Bob Lipman and Dave Faucher on the call. A free live audio stream will also be available through the official website of Big Green athletics, DartmouthSports.com, with Brett Franklin describing the action.
Notes: Nine of Dartmouth's 10 wins this year have come when holding its opponent to under 40 percent from the floor … the Big Green had not won three straight Ivy League games since ending the 2014-15 season on a five-game streak.
