Schae Nelson hit two home runs on the day
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Dartmouth softball split day two of Charleston Classic, falling to Army to and taking down Ohio to bring its record to 2-2. The Golden Knights improve to 6-7, while the Bobcats fall to 4-9.
Vs. Army:
Dartmouth brought out its power bats in game one against Army, but it was not enough as the Golden Knights scored six runs in the second, one in the fifth and five more in the sixth to come away with a 12-4 win in six innings.
Abby Shipley went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, while Schae Nelson and Micah Schroder each notched their first long balls of the year as well. Calista Almer reached base twice with a pair of walks.
After Madie Augusto went 1-2-3 in the first inning, the Golden Knights got their sticks going for a six run second. Three singles loaded the bases and Taylor Livingston drove them all home with a triple to center field. A couple of base hits brought in two more runs and the final run of the frame scored on an error.
The Big Green made it a four-run deficit in the third. Almer earned a two-out walk and Schae Nelson followed with a blast over the left field fence to make the score 6-2.
Augusto settled down and did not allow a run for the next two innings, picking up a strikeout in the process. A single and a double in consecutive at bats extended the Army advantage to 7-2 in the fifth.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Schroder and Shipley launched back-to-back home runs, cutting the gap to 7-4.
The run rule closed the game in the bottom half of the sixth when four more runs came across on three singles and a fielder's choice.Â
Vs. Ohio:
Convincing pitching performances mixed with timely hitting lifted the Big Green to a 6-4Â victory over Ohio in game two of the day.
Schae Nelson went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and a walk. Micah Schroder picked up two hits with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Abby Shipley also had two hits with an RBI and Billie McFadyen tallied two hits as well.
Brooke Plonka started in the circle and went 4.0 innings with one strikeout, one walk and allowed three earned. Madie Augusto earned the win and put together her best performance of the young season in relief, tossing the final 2.2 innings with a strikeout and one run given up.
Ohio scored first in the first after a leadoff double and a single. Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning when Nelson got on with a base knock and stole second, she was brought in on a Bobcat error off the bat of Schroder. McFadyen then singled to advance Schroder to third and Kate Farren drove her in with a single.
With two gone in the third, Schroder singled up the middle and Shipley doubled her in to push the lead to 3-1. The Bobcats evened the score in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and an RBI base hit.
Nelson took advantage of a dropped foul ball and led off the fifth with a solo home run to make the score 4-3 for her team-leading second long ball of the year.
Schroder doubled in Nelson and Calista Almer to extend the lead to 6-3. Ohio scored one more in the seventh, but a groundout to Almer at short was the final out of the contest.
