HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team fell in its 2019-20 regular-season finale, 4-1, to visiting Rensselaer Saturday night at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green (13-12-4, 10-10-2 ECAC) finished the season as the No. 6 seed in the ECAC Hockey postseason tournament and will welcome No. 11 Princeton to Thompson Arena for a best-of-three first-round series next weekend.
Game times for Friday and Saturday are scheduled for 7 p.m., while an if-necessary third game would be played at 5 p.m.
The lone Dartmouth goal scored on Saturday was by sophomore
Drew O'Connor, his league-leading 21st of the season. The team's first shorthanded score of the year also was the 16th goal in league play for O'Connor, the most of any player in ECAC Hockey this year, making him the first Big Green skater to lead the conference in goals in league games since former All-American Ross Brownridge in 1979-80.
RPI (17-15-2, 13-8-1 ECAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three goals in a five-minute span in the middle period, including two goals in 28 seconds in four-on-four play. Patrick Polino, Tristan Ashbrook and Todd Burgess were responsible for the three tallies in the middle frame.
O'Connor responded with the shorthanded marker with just 63 seconds remaining in the frame to pull to within two heading into the locker room for the second intermission. Senior
Daniel Warpecha and rookie
Brock Paul had the helpers on the score.
"I thought we played well but had a few errors that ended up in the back of our net," Koenig Family Head Coach
Bob Gaudet '81. "It's good to be playing at home next week and I thought tonight could have gone the other way. We had some good bids early."
Jake Marrello hit the empty net near the end of the third to seal the game and earn the Engineers a season sweep of Dartmouth for the first time since 2013-14 and a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed in the upcoing postseason.
Senior
Adrian Clark made 23 saves in the game before giving way to classmate
Dean Shatzer for the final two minutes and 13 seconds of play. The Engineers got 37 saves from sophomore goalie Owen Savory, including 29 in the final two periods.
Following the game, the nine members of the senior class were honored for their contributions to the program over the course of four seasons. Those seniors are:
Ben DiMaio,
Ryan Blankemeier,
Will Graber,
Daniel Warpecha,
Clay Han,
Shane Sellar,
Cam Strong, Clark and Shatzer.
Next weekend will mark the third all-time postseason meeting between the two programs with both the 2007 quarterfinals and the 2015 first round both being played in Hanover and the home team winning each time.
