Men's Basketball: Dartmouth 44, Penn State 39
By defeating Princeton in the Eastern League playoff game at the Palestra, 46-38, Dartmouth earned its second straight trip to the eight-team NCAA Tournament. In the opening round held in New Orleans at Tulane Gym, the 20-3 Big Green were paired up with 17-2 Penn State. The Nittany Lions featured senior captain and leading scorer Elmer Gross, who went on to coach at his alma mater from 1949-54 and post a record of 80-40, plus became the first person both to play and coach in the NCAA Tournament, guiding the 1954 squad to the Final Four.
Dartmouth, captained by Charles Pearson '42 (the lone senior in the starting lineup), had All-American George Munroe '43, who averaged 15.0 points a game and shot over 80 percent at the foul line. But with the Penn State defense focusing its efforts on Munroe, the Big Green's second-leading scorer, James Olsen (14.0 ppg), came up big with a game-high 19 points. He was the only Dartmouth player to score in double figures, though Robert Myers '43 and future All-American Stanley Skaug '43 both chipped in seven points while Munroe was limited to five.
The Big Green built up a 22-16 lead by halftime, and Olsen's 12 second-half points helped them hold off the Nittany Lions to advance to the regional final (and Final Four) to square off against an 18-4 Kentucky squad. The Wildcats — led by the legendary Adolph Rupp — were coming off a 46-44 victory over Illinois. But that's a story for another day …
