Rookie Laura Mills ’00 holds Blue Devils hitless
March 29, 1997: Laura Mills '00 Tosses No-Hitter at Central Connecticut
There is something about Dartmouth softball throwing no-hitters in late March. On this date 23 years ago at Central Connecticut State, Laura Mills became the first freshman in program history to twirl a no-hitter in the circle.
A native of Columbus, Ohio, Mills struck out nine batters and only walked one over seven innings. She fanned the CCSU's second hitter in the lineup three times and sat down the fifth and sixth batters twice each. Only three batters reached base against her thanks to a pair of errors, but Mills stranded all three as the Big Green defeated the Blue Devils, 4-0.
Offensively, Dartmouth scored twice in both the third and sixth innings. Freshmen Kate Winter and Elizabeth Lucchesi both reached base in the third and eventually came around to score. In the sixth, rookie Ayn Huntington drove in junior Lauren McQuade with an RBI triple and Mills, who was batting seventh, followed that up by helping herself with an RBI single.
Come back tomorrow for another no-hitter by the Big Green softball team …
