HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth Big Green rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to take the lead early in the second stanza, but Yale (23-6, 11-2 Ivy) hit a barrage of 3-pointers to beat Dartmouth (12-16, 5-8 Ivy) on Friday night at Leede Arena, 72-61. The loss eliminated the Big Green from earning a berth at the Ivy League Tournament next week, while Yale clinched the outright conference crown coupled with Harvard's 64-55 loss to Brown this evening.
Eric Monroe led the Bulldogs with 15 points on five 3-pointers — four coming during a crucial run in the second half — while Paul Atkinson and Azar Swain contributed 14 points apiece. Jordan Bruner did all of the little things, leading Yale with 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) for the game with 10 trifectas, plus had a slim 35-34 edge on the boards but a 15-8 advantage in second-chance points thanks to eight offensive rebounds.
Juniors
Aaryn Rai and
Chris Knight led Dartmouth with 18 and 17 points, respectively, combining to hit 14-of-21 from the floor. Although the Green essentially matched the Bulldogs' overall accuracy, they managed just 6-of-21 (.286) from long range and converted only 9-of-16 (.563) at the foul line.
Yale jumped out to a 27-11 lead before 11 minutes had expired, hitting 12-of-19 shots while holding Dartmouth to a mere 4-of-14. But a Knight layup with 9:10 left in the half ignited an 11-point run for the Big Green with sophomore
Taurus Samuels contributing a 3-pointer and capping the run with a contested layup, closing the gap to five, 27-22.
A Swain 3-pointer with under two minutes before the intermission boosted the Bulldog lead back to seven, but Knight and Rai each had buckets in the paint to close the half and cut the deficit to three at 33-30.
Dartmouth maintained its momentum at the start of the second half as senior
Ian Sistare knocked down a triple and Knight followed with a hook shot just outside the paint for the first Big Green lead of the night at 35-33. Jalen Gabiddon and Knight traded buckets before Swain launched one from the perimeter to put the Bulldogs back on top, 38-37.
Rai provided a three points the hard way, but that's when Monroe heated up with his first trey. A long
Ian Carter baseline jumper gave Dartmouth its last lead at 42-41, and Yale answered with an Atkinson three-point play and another triple by Monroe. Two free throws by Carter couldn't slow down the Bulldogs, which rattled off the next 10 points with five from Wyatt Yess and another three from Monroe, and suddenly Yale was back up by 13, 57-44.
Monroe's last three built the bulge to 15 points, 63-48, with 4:52 to play, and although Dartmouth rallied to get back within seven with just under a minute to play, 67-60, that was as close as it would get.
The Big Green will close out the 2019-20 season by hosting Brown (14-12, 7-6 Ivy), which needs to beat Dartmouth and have Penn lose at home to a Columbia team that has lost 12 straight contests, to earn the 4-seed for the Ivy League Tournament. Tip time is 7 p.m. with the game streamed live on ESPN+ featuring Bob Lipman and Dave Faucher calling the action.
