MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior
Justin Sodokoff opened competition at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship on Monday, making it back to finals on the 3-meter board.
Â
The three-day event is being hosted at West Virginia University's Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.
Â
A total of 47 men and 68 women competed on the opening day of the meet. The top 18 divers from the preliminary round reached the finals in each event.
Â
In prelims, Sodokoff notched a prelim score of 315.00 to finish in 12th place and move on to finals. He added 368.60 to his total score to jump half a dozen spots to take sixth with a score of 683.60. There were five Ivy League divers who made it back to finals and Sodokoff had the second-best score behind Christian DeVol from Yale in fifth.
Â
"I am very proud of Justin," head diving coach
Chris Hamilton said. "He never quit today. In finals, he had a last dive of 78 points and that allowed him to move up six spots. He missed the NCAA automatic bid by just five points."
Â
Even though Sodokoff just missed out on automatically qualifying, the junior still has a chance to be invited based on his high score.
Â
Competition continues on Tuesday at 12 p.m. on the 1-meter board.
