MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior
Justin Sodokoff qualified for the NCAA Championship on the 1-meter diving board on Tuesday.
Â
He is the first Big Green diver to qualify since Toby Hays and Courtney DuBois competed in 1999.
Â
In prelims, Sodokoff was one of 11 Ivy League divers in the event, finishing in second place with a score of 336.70 and coming after Navy's Bradley Buchter (388.40). Sodokoff added another 283.95 at finals to place second overall with a score of 672.35, again coming in after Buchter (765.50).
Â
"Going to Zones for the first time, I didn't know what to expect," Sodokoff said. "However, I did know that I trained all year for this moment and that I was going to give it my all. It was incredible to dive alongside some of the best in the country and be able to perform the way I did. Finishing sixth on 3-meter and missing the cut by five points left a bitter taste in my mouth. Knowing how close I was to sending my coach and I to our first NCAA Championship set me into another gear.
Â
"I entered the 1-meter event with a mentality to attack every dive like it was the last of my career," Sodokoff continued. "When I finished second after putting 12 dives together, I could not have been happier and quite frankly, I was in shock. I immediately hugged my coach and said 'we really did it, Chris.' Overall, it was a surreal experience, as a full year of hard work finally paid off. I could not be more honored to send Chris, a man who has given everything to this program and bleeds Green, to the first championship of his career."

The 2020 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship will take place from March 25-28 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
