April 13, 2013: Men's Lacrosse edges nationally ranked Princeton
Freshman Cam Lee '16 scored the biggest goal of his young career, netting the game winner against No. 9 Princeton in a 10-9 victory at Scully-Fahey Field.
The Big Green picked up their first win against a ranked opponent since a 9-6 defeat of No. 19 Colgate the previous February. This was also Dartmouth's first win over Princeton since April 26, 2008.
The Tigers opened the game scoring three consecutive goals before junior Mike Olentine '14 put the Big Green on the board. The bulk of the scoring was done in the second quarter, as the Ivy foes combined to net eight goals, and Princeton went into the half holding on to a 7-5 edge.
In the second half, Dartmouth outscored its opponent, 5-2, thanks to a three-goal surge in the fourth started by sophomore Adam Fishman '15 and capped by Lee. Trailing, 9-8, senior Nikki Dysenchuk '13 tied things up and Lee gave the Green their first lead of the game with 4:40 remaining in the contest as he converted a pass from classmate KC Beard '16 for a man-up marker and the eventual game winner.
April 13, 2019 — Women's Lacrosse in charge of its own destiny in victory over #9 Penn
After trailing the entire first half, a pair of scoring runs in the second saw Dartmouth earn a 15-11 road win at No. 9 Penn, ruining the Quakers' previously unblemished Ivy League record. Down 7-4 soon after the start of the second half, the team in green would rip off four straight — the last in unassisted fashion by sophomore Michelle Yu '21 — to take their first lead of the day with 19 minutes to play.
After Penn knotted the score at eight less than a minute later, the Big Green rattled off four more goals, beginning with a tally by senior Campbell Brewer '19 from classmate Kellen D'Alleva '19.
Dartmouth would never look back and picked up the win at Franklin Field, putting itself in position to control its own destiny for a run at the Ivy League title.
The win was also the first against a top-10 team in seven years, dating back to a 9-7 home win against… No. 9 Penn on April 12, 2012.
April 13, 1970 — Baseball begins a 21-game winning streak
The 1970 baseball season got off to a rather ignominious start for Dartmouth as the team dropped eight of its first 11 games. The Big Green did manage to sweep a doubleheader at N.C. State but lost their other three contests against the Wolfpack. After an extra-inning loss at Wake Forest and a pair of defeats at East Carolina, Dartmouth returned north and fared little better in its first three matchups with foes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) with a loss at Columbia and a twinbill split at Princeton.
It would be more than two months before Dartmouth lost again.
The winning streak began with the home opener 50 years ago to the day as the college renamed its field in honor of former All-American, Yankee third baseman and Dartmouth Athletics Director Red Rolfe. The Big Green bested Boston University on the newly christened field, 7-3, with junior Bill Saumseigle '71 earning the win on the mound and sophomore Charlie Janes '72 picking up the save by hurling four innings of one-hit shutout ball.
The two teams traded runs in the third before Dartmouth took control with two in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Senior shortstop Bob Mlakar '70 had three of the Green's 14 hits including a double that afternoon, senior right fielder Bruce Saylor '70 belted a solo blast — one of his team-leading three that year — junior catcher Tim Hannigan '71 singled, doubled and drove in two and even Saumseigle helped his own cause with an RBI double. Not even a Terrier triple play could slow down the Big Green bats.
Dartmouth went on to win its next 20 games as well, shattering the program record of 13 set just three years earlier. The last win in the 21-game streak came in Omaha in the opening game of the College World Series, but that's a story for another day …
