Men's Lacrosse picks up an upset win at Gillette Stadium
April 3, 2010: Big Green beat #6 Big Red at Gillette
Dartmouth picked the stage of Gillette Stadium to upset No. 6 Cornell, 8-6, at the New England Lacrosse Classic 10 years ago. The Big Green trailed for little more than a minute throughout the contest and took the lead for good on a goal by junior Josh Etzion late in the third, and two Big Red goals in the final 10 seconds were made moot.
Sophomore goalkeeper Fergus Campbell was the story of the first quarter, as he managed to keep Cornell off the board even with its 11-1 shot advantage. It was not until 9:34 of the second that the Big Red would break through, but Dartmouth responded with a pair of goals by senior Ari Sussman and another by freshman Chris Costabile to take a two-goal lead into the break.
Things got interesting in the third quarter; Cornell closed to within one, but Etzion answered right back to maintain the Big Green's advantage. That did not last, however, as the Big Red tied things up at 4-4, but Etzion supplied the response with 2:46 left in the quarter as his shot trickled into the net to put Dartmouth back on top, 5-4.
The Big Green scored three times in the fourth — with Sussman providing two of those goals — to put the game out of reach with an 8-4 advantage and just under two minutes showing.
There were many firsts in this game: the first win over Cornell since 1997, the first win over a top-10 team since 2008 and the first goalie to make 20-plus saves since 2004 (Campbell ended the game with 23 stops).
