Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Tatyanah Castillo of the softball team.
Dartmouthsports.com: What have you been up to since returning home
?
Tatyanah Castillo: Since returning home, I have been spending all of my free time with my family. Now that I am "retired" from softball, my dad and brother have teamed up to try and teach me how to play golf. We have also perfected a daily routine that consists of three mile-long walks to break up our work schedule, followed by helping mom cook family dinner, and an hour of the Netflix show
Money Heist before bed.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
TC: My favorite place on campus would definitely be the Hop (courtyard Café). The workers always greet you with a smile and genuinely care about how your day is going. Bob and Bobbi are two workers that have made my Dartmouth experience unforgettable. I can always count on seeing them right behind home plate for every home softball game. Bob, Bobbi, and all of the Hop workers helped make Dartmouth feel like a second home!
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
TC: If I could swap places with one teammate, it would be
Jade Bravo. She is incredibly wise (the team Yoda), an academic and athletic weapon, and a great older sister to little Jonny and Mikayla.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory in your Dartmouth career?
TC: My favorite on-field memory was the last at-bat of my college career. We were playing Kentucky and we were down by four when our hitting coach, Tim Homan, came up and asked if I was ready to go in to pinch-hit. I had been charting the pitcher all game and I knew I could get the job done. I ended up leading off the next inning with a double for the team. The amount of confidence coach Homan had in my ability to get the job done is what made me feel prepared to go in and lead off the inning! I will always be an unforgettable end to an unforgettable experience with Dartmouth Softball.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
TC: I will be working for Microsoft as a Customer Success Manager. As of now, I start on July 27.
DS: What is your hidden talent or something that someone might not know about you?
TC: Something people might not know about me is that I have a love for classic cars. My dad has taught me everything I know about cars.
When I was little he would give me "stoplight tests." I would have 30 seconds to look at every car stopped at the intersection, then I would have to close my eyes and tell him the make, model, and color of every car I could remember. We would battle each other back and forth on long road trips. This is one of my favorite childhood traditions.
When I was in high school, he bought a beat-up 1969 Chevy c10. It became a family project. We did a complete frame off restoration. In the end, our truck had gone through an extreme makeover. We were even able to enter it in car shows under the name "Fine Dime." We eventually had to sell it to help pay for college.
My goal is to get another project that our family can work on. It will take me a few years, but it will be worth it!
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
TC: My lifelong nickname has always been Taty. But I was given a new nickname when joining Dartmouth softball.
During my freshman year, Coach
Molly Fichtner started calling me Tater Tats. For a while, everyone called me the full thing, but eventually, it branched into two nicknames. Some of the girls would call me Tater, and the rest called me Tats. Taty and Tats are the nicknames that carried on, but I will still respond to Tater.
DS: What are you going to miss most about Dartmouth?
TC: I am going to miss the family that I created for myself. My softball family, my DP2 family, my bible study, my sorority sisters, and all of my other friends! These are people that have helped make my Dartmouth experience unforgettable!
