June 5, 2010 — Baseball wins an NCAA Regional game for first time in 23 years
With a heat index soaring over 100 degrees in Miami that led to more than half a dozen players getting an IV afterward, along with the specter of thunderstorms threatening to interrupt play, the Dartmouth baseball team managed to stave off elimination at the 2010 Coral Gables Regional by defeating Florida International University in a slugfest, 15-9. It was the first Big Green victory at an NCAA Regional since blanking Michigan in 1987, 4-0.
Dartmouth had lost its opener at the four-team regional to the host Hurricanes by a final of 12-8, but showed plenty of heart after falling behind by 10 runs after four innings. The bats woke up in the fifth and rapped out 11 hits over the final five frames with sophomore Joe Sclafani '12 belting a pair of home runs and junior Sam Bean '11 going 4-for-5 while scoring twice.
On this day, most of the attention was focused on the FIU second baseman, Garrett Wittels, who entered the game with a 55-game hitting streak, three shy of the NCAA Division I record set by Robin Ventura of Oklahoma State. Then the Big Green found themselves in an early hole once again as the Panthers put a run on the board in the top of first courtesy of a Wittels RBI double to match Joe DiMaggio's streak of 56 games.
But the Dartmouth offense got started a bit earlier on this day, responding with two runs in its half of the first as Bean doubled home one and junior Jason Brooks '11 brought home another with a grounder to second. The lead was short-lived, however, as FIU answered with five in the top of the second for a 6-2 lead.
Sophomore and future big leaguer Cole Sulser '12 took over on the mound to start the third and just about everything went the Big Green's way. After he twirled a 1-2-3 inning, Dartmouth reclaimed the lead with a five-run third, capped by a two-run homer off the bat of freshman Zack Bellenger '13. Sulser did have a hiccup in the fifth by surrendering a solo homer and three consecutive singles — all with two down — as the Panthers went back on top, 8-7. But Bellenger knotted the game at eight in the bottom half with his second long ball of the game and Brooks launched a grand slam in the sixth to put Dartmouth on top for good.
Second-team All-Ivy reliever Sulser earned the victory to improve to 8-0 — the most wins in a Big Green season without a loss — by tossing five innings and surrendering just two runs, and freshman southpaw Kyle Hunter '13 closed out the final two frames to seal the win. Brooks finished the game with a career-high six RBIs while Bean was 3-for-4 with two RBI doubles and three runs scored. Bean went on to be the only Dartmouth player named to the all-tournament team after hitting .571 (8-for-14) in three games.
