June 9, 2012 — Abbey D'Agostino wins the first of seven national titles in women's track and cross country
The first ever national championship in the history of the Dartmouth's women's track & field program came via sophomore Abbey D'Agostino in the 5000m at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Not only did D'Agostino claim the historic title, she did it in the most exciting fashion, narrowly edging out Washington's Megan Goethals by just the three-hundredths of a second. D'Agostino crossed the finish line in 16:11.34, while Goethals was credited with a time of 16:11.37.
Running at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, the temperature on the track that Sunday afternoon reached into the low 100's, making a distance race like the 5000m an even more strenuous race.
The Big Green women had never had an individual champion before in the history of the program, while D'Agostino's title in Iowa marking the first for either the Big Green men or the women since 1997 when Adam Nelson won the shot put.
The Topsfield, Massachusetts, native would not be a stranger to national championships in her career, winning seven in total to become the most decorated student-athlete in the history of the Ivy League. Her seven titles came across all three seasons of competition, winning four indoor titles in the junior and senior seasons, another 5000m outdoor title in 2013 and the 2013 cross country crown, the first Ivy Leaguer on either the men's or women's side to accomplish the feat.
