HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's golf team gathered online to announce its team awards to the members of the squad, and a pair of underclassmen shared MVP honors in sophomore
Kaitlyn Lees and freshman
Angela Zhang.
Lees, an All-Ivy League First Team golfer as a rookie in 2018-19, led the Big Green in stroke average (74.9) for the second straight year. She finished in the top 20 in three of the four tournaments the team played before the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly ended the campaign, leading the squad twice. In each of her 10 rounds, the native of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, shot in the 70s with a season-low 71 (-1) coming on her home course in the Dartmouth Invitational to start the fall. Lees finished the abbreviated campaign by tying for 12th out of 81 golfers at the FAU Winter Warmup in February as Dartmouth finished fourth out of the 14 teams, and she also earned All-Academic Scholar honors from the Women's Golf Coaches Association.
Not only was Zhang named co-MVP, but she also earned the team's Rookie of the Year award. The freshman from Vancouver, British Columbia, nearly matched Lees' stroke average at 75.1 with two top-20 finishes, including the lowest three-round total in program history when she carded a 73-72-71—216 (E) with a dozen birdies at the FAU Winter Warmup to place third. She began her collegiate career by tying for 20th out of 81 at the Dartmouth Invitational and shot 76 or better in nine of her 10 rounds. Like Lees, Zhang was also an All-Academic Scholar as chosen by the WGCA.
The Most Improved Player award went to sophomore
Kristen Chen. After a promising rookie campaign, Chen shaved more than two strokes off her stroke average this year at 76.6. The best finish for the native of Thousand Oaks, California, came at the Princeton Invitational where she tied for 18th out of 80 golfers with a 5-over 149. Her low round for the season came at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational hosted by Delaware, carding an even-par 72 over the second tour of the 18 holes.
Finally, junior
Julianne Strauch was the recipient of the Gibby Award, given in honor of the former and late head coach Kevin Gibson for the player that has the spirit of the game of golf and works hard both on and off the course. Hailing from Advance, North Carolina, Strauch played in all three fall tournaments, tying for 20th at the Dartmouth Invitational with a 6-over 150. She is also a two-time All-Academic Scholar as a biology major.
